I've never seen one. But I'm not sure how many people really care,,,
But! someone wanted that one and paid the price. I hope the itch is scratched!

I had a 170 once upon a time. Man I wanted to like that rifle so bad but it never fulfilled anything for me. Traded it for a Rigid generator that starts on the the first pull.

Holy stink,12-hundred! That makes it the patron saint of econo guns. Not that there's anything wrong with econo guns.

I bought a 170 in 35 Rem a while back here from the classifieds. Great condition, nice little New England deer rifle. I have a vintage Weaver V7 that will be going on it, and it will be in the deer woods with me this Fall. I have seen several in 30-30, but very few in 35 Rem.

Did one of you guys win this one on GUNBROKER? GB#853943074 It just goes to show that a fool and his money are soon parted. I've owned several 170s, still have 2x 30-30 and a 35. Despite an "iffy" trigger, they are pretty accurate, more than enough for a woods range still hunting rifle. I think of the 30-30s as $300 to $350 rifles and the 35s as $350 to $400 rifles, these prices reflect a range in condition from very good to excellent. Minty and NIB would obviously be higher, but I can't see $1,200 for the best Savage 170 ever made. EDIT: If anyone is interested, there is a nice article about the Savage 170 by David Moreton in the February 1971 edition of Guns & Ammo. The suggested retail price at that time was $99.75.

Shill bidder perchance? Something fishy there, or else a case of the stars aligning on two clowns who had more money than good sense.
A case of good beer for $40 or the best 170 in the world for the same money? I'd opt for the case of beer.

Having owned several of them, I'd happily give $40 for a pretty good Model 170, let alone the best 170 in the World. I gave 170s in 30-30 to young brothers in VT who wanted pump guns like their local legend Larry Benoit shot, but weren't physically large enough to handle a Remington 760 chambered for any of the commonly available cartridges larger than 243.

Quick look at gunbroker shows two other 35's without boxes sold for $420 and $675.
30-30's range from mid-$200's to $480.
There was a 30-30 with box for $399 that went unsold.

When you start something at .01 all it takes is two egos and you can see some crazy chit. If I've said it once I've said it 1000 times: A gun is worth whatever somebody is willing to pay for it. Edit: Just to make my point. I recently put a gun up on GB, 14 day auction with a starting price of $695. I had about 70 watchers and not a single bid. So I relisted it at $.01 no reserve. It brought $900. Crazy

Yeah, but it can cut both ways. I recently won a penny auction no reserve on GB for- a penny. Luckily I was the only ego in attendance! It griped me to pay the $20 shipping on top of that, but what the heck.
170's certainly have their place, just not in my space. I've handled and shot a couple over the years- maybe not a fair representation, but spread out over enough time to be a fair sampling- and I was never impressed. I will admit that one was stupidly accurate- enough so that the gent shooting it, a .30-30 170, copped a 2nd or 3rd place finish in a production class Cast Bullet Association match damn near 40 years ago now.
I guess now that age and a maker's mark on a gun qualifies it for "collector" status. Never mind if it is a work of the gunmaker's art or not.

Was it a minty New Haven Model 70 featherweight? I've never taken a bath on .01 auction...
