While heading back to my shop after checking on a logging operation, I saw this car pull up to a gas station in the middle of nowhere. The more I looked at it, the more I realized I didn't have a clue what I was seeing. I'm still not positive...It was traveling with 2 trucks puling a couple of Porsches and an XKE.

Yep, it’s a Porsche. Hand hammered aluminum from Gmund. Probably a million dollar car.......at least.

google tells me it’s a type 64. Very cool

No, I'm in SE Georgia and the car did pull up to a gas pump...I have a son that is a car guy. He said it looked like the 1939 Type 64 Porsche. I never heard of it, evidently not many were made and for good reason. It's ugly! There was something about one that didn't sell for $17 million. To look at it I'd have thought $1700 would be a fair price. It was running and driveable.

Looks sort of like an Emory Outlaw Porsche but not as well done.

I don't believe that's a Gmund.

I believe it's a Porsche Type 64................the precursor to the 356. Note the "bubbled" narrow high roof, which is not a hallmark of the Gmund.

I also think it may be a replica, as the rear treatment (venting and tail lights) is more reminiscent of a modern Beetle rather than an original Type 64.

Very interesting.. I googled " Porsche Type 64" and apparently that's it. Google will give you all kinds of interesting info. It's extremely rare, and extremely valuable. So much so that I'd be afraid to drive it out in public for fear of all the idiots on the road today. The styling reminds me of the Porsche 356 coupes from the 50's - early 60's. You can see where they got their inspiration from.

Darn, I was going to guess that Airstream and Porsche got together and had an illegitimate love child...

1939 Porsche prototype; only survives today. I failed to sell at $17 million. I rather suspect that the one you saw was a replace; the original is too valuable to drive on the road.

Ferdinand Porsche built the 3 Type 64 race cars in 1939. One of the semantics expressed in the aborted sale at auction of the surviving Type 64......was that it technically was not a "Porsche", as the Porsche company did not exist as yet.

Probably headed to the 'Car Corral" in Daytona Beach.

I've had a few Beetles 1951s-1955s. Never seen a Beetle with the pictured tail lights. I also owned a rusted out 1951 356 that I scavenged parts for other projects. Other than the rounded lines, it has nothing like the type 64. Grandview, it could be a replica, but?
