Recently picked up a pretty clean 99 in 300 at a local gunshow. Had the usual flaking varnish on the stock so I refinished the wood and ended up with a nice little 22" barreled rifle for the money. Fits in with the other DL's just fine. Hard to pass up a clean DL. I know most of you guys hate em. LOL.

Geez Roy, I think you officially qualify as the west coast armory for the 99. Nice work!

This is tung oil sanded between coats (lost track of # of coats) then steel wooled and waxed with renaissance wax at the end.

What did you use to remove the varnish that didn't effect the color?

I use a paste stripper to remove all varnish and stain first before any sanding.

Savage had some crappy finishes back in the 60's. This 1965 double diamond is next.
