If I ever get a tattoo it's going to be basket weave double checkering.

I thought you were going to say if you ever got a tattoo you were going to have Roy do it!

Looks good!

Did a similar job on a 1963 Remington 700 243 carbine stock with pressed checkering and their Dupont "bowling ball" epoxy finish.

Stripped it and used multiple coats of Tung oil to high light the grain. Prefer the look of a hand rubbed oil finish on that era of gun.

Wow!!!!! Beautiful work. You've got me thinking about doing the same on the stock of my 1957 Winchester 88. The finish is peeling.

Thanks for the info and inspiration!

I had a single shot 16 gauge that looked just like that. I was about 12 and stripped it to bare wood. Don't know what they had on it to make it look brown, but underneath was the most beautiful Birdseye Maple you had ever seen.I had never seen a Birdseye Maple stock until I saw Roger's and Don's, and that one of course.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

I found one of those a few years ago as well. I wondered if it might be the only one! I've since gotten a .243, 300, and 308 all double diamond. Not real common.

Great job on that rifle Fireball. Looks a lot better than the flaking finish for sure and for me would increase it's value . I've never seen the "double diamond" checkering till this thread. I like it better than the basket weave design. Mom said I had to learn something new everyday, so I guess i'm done. grin

No, didn't think to take any on that one. Just worked on it the last two weeks as the flu allowed so wasn't real sharp.
