Good morning gents,
Looking for a respectable charter operation to fish near Miami. (area is not that important really,as long as it's South Fla.)
Maybe April/May, # 2 son goes to the U and wants to go fishing for something.
I was thinking flat water for Tarpon or such, but I am also content with just taking him fishing for anything.
Thoughts or recommendations
thanks in advance
Ron

I used Bud and Mary's Marina on Islemarada last May for tarpon. They work with many captains both off shore and inshore, full day or half day. We were pleased with every aspect of their operation.

I grew up in South Florida. There aren't too many bad fishing spots from Fort Pierce to Key West but, for tarpon, I would go somewhere in the Keys. The west coast of Florida is the region that is known for its great tarpon fishing but that can be a long haul from Miami. That time of year, mahi should be getting good in that area and the sailfish may still be biting.

Rewards fishing fleet is pretty fun and reasonable you can either book a private charter or do a party boat for 50 bucks. Great views of Miami from the boat. rewards

I agree with several others here. Islamorada in the Keys is hard to beat. Bud and Mary's marina can hook you up with a charter for Tarpon, offshore fishing, or back country fishing in the Gulf. I have commercial fished from Ft. Pierce to marathon, been fishing these waters for almost 50 years. A lot has changed but IMO its worth the drive to the Keys.

Are you sure you want to catch a tarpon? Lots of people think they want to catch a tarpon, till the have to fight and land a respectable tarpon. I grew up in SW Florida, and we learned to hate tarpon. Boca Grande, Pine Island Sound, Charlotte Harbor. Naples to Tampa Bay is where the action was in the old days with Boca Grande being ground zero. You might get a better bang for your buck as well. I long for the Boca Grande of my youth, when there were still wide open spaces and you could talk to the old timers of giant Jewfish around the phosphate docks. It wasn't a bad childhood. Lots of quail, burrowing owls, kestrels, and those fork tail kites.

DIY. Sand fleas for bait on the east coast. You can dig your own, where the waves break on the beach.
