big time,
i have seen quite a few ss/syn 338's going for $525-550. i know you can buy the boyds laminate for $100 and change or just shoot it and wait for a lss stock to pop up used. maybe a mcmillan also. if you want some numbers on the 700 ss/syn in 338 let me know. send me an email.......

thanks much for all the input.

on trying a 338 ultra...not gonna happen. don't know anybody locally that owns one, or even a 338 win mag, for that matter. not much call for rifles of this size in these parts.

i am beginning to warm up to the idea of a 338 ultra...it was mentioned that it just needed to be downloaded 10 or so grains...wonder if something like retumbo could be used for a better case fill at the reduced charges?

the 375 is still not completely out of the question... i found a new-looking ruger #1 in 375 for about $550, and being as that rifle's been sitting awhile and is likely to sit awhile longer, it may become cheaper yet...however, as cheap as that rifle may be or become, it still doesn't satisfy my desire for a 700 lss...guess i'll peruse the used racks for awhile yet, see what comes along...

all i want is a new or like new 700 lss in 338 win mag... evidently i'm hard to please...

again, thanks for the input.

A great reduced hunting load is the Barnes 185gr XLC with a caseful of H-1000. Velocity runs @ 3300fps and is not much more than a 338winmag in recoil. I used this load 2 years ago with complete success.

The 225gr Hornady Sp is another bullet that loves H-1000. I got mine down to 2900fps with very good accuracy.

Good luck..

For loads, my most accurate load for 210 XLC's is 94 grains of RL 22, giving 3110 fps. Pretty mild compared to max loads. For some reason, 93 grains is noticeably milder than the 94 grain load. Can't explain it, but it to my shoulder, it's a substantial difference.

BT, pick up yourself a LSS in 7MM Mag, what ever custom barrel in .338 you like, take it to your favorite gunsmith and when he's done you'll have what you want!

I second the idea of trying before you buy. Statiscally, only 10-20% of the shooting public can really shoot a rifle with recoil over that of the 30'06.
I've shot several .338's, and a few .375's. I used to load test and check sights for the owners of these rifles. Does that give you a hint as to how they felt about shooting them ? If I get into "the African Mode", I'll buy one. And shoot the heck out of it.
I learned long ago, I can shoot a magnum. But not quite as well as I can a standard round. When I'm under pressure, or " a little off" that day, I'm worse. What's more, I've learned that premium bullets make the "little" rounds real killers.
If you do buy a big .338, plan on shooting more. I loose the shooting skill I need when I hunt with a magnum faster than I do with a standard round. So I need to shoot them more to keep up. Keep up, or shall we say near the skill level of the lighter kickers. I discovered I can, but I must work harder to do so. E

I have used the 338 Win. on a Mauser action for years...I tried the 340 Wby and the Ultra...Frankly they had little to offer other than blast and recoil over the 338...Mostly I shoot the 300 gr. Woodleighs for dangerous game and 210 Noslers for plainsgame and sometimes elk, but the 300 is sure a great elk hammer.....I don't too excited over ultra fast velocity that tends to wreck bullets and cause more problems than it's worth...

Ray,

Nice to see you at the Campfire! There's a few Mauser fans on this site (and some in the shadows I know), but we're grossly outnumbered by the M700 fans.

Now I'm not the only "crf, slow, and heavy" fan around here.

I am a great fan of the .338 bore size but have shot only one .338 Ultra and it was a Sendero one of my friends owns. Recoil did not seem to be much of a problem and I would probably buy one if I did not already own a .338 Win Mag. in a Model 70 Win. For me at least, that rifle will do all I ever want a .338 to do and accuracy is exceptional. If you don't reload I would definitely go with the Win. Mag. because of ammo availibility. However, the Ultra seems one really fine catridge.
