Why oh why did they change from a spin on filter to this silly canister ?

Recently purchased a pre owned 2011 Lexus GX 460 with 4.6L V8 w/95K miles (holds 8 qts)

So used to having two 4.0L Tacoma's with the so easy to do oil changes....

Now this..... cry......still plan on doing myself....bought this kit shown on Amazon...

Just to have a spare housing.....needed the wrench too.......complete with gaskets etc

You only have to swap the longer perforated filter support tube from OEM to the newer metal style housing

Also found good deal with Walmart on line....6 jugs of full syn 0-20 for $83 shipped (Warren Oil)

Amazon also has just the metal housing alone for $21 if you want a spare

Highlanders have this same setup, and while it does take more time to replace the cartridge it's really not that big of a deal once you get used to the procedure. The good news is there isn't oil running down the block/frame like most filter setups.

I also have a Highlander. I do like the way you can drain the filter before you remove it. It's cleaner that way. I don't know if it's by design but the filter is also where you can easily get a catch pan under it. Many engines have filters in a locations where the oil dumps on top of the axle or something. Some of them were designed by idiots.

The reason they put that in is the very tight tolerances in their engines and the thin oil being run in said vehicles, as you can see there is no check valve on these that would let dirty oil bypass the filter. Its insurance.

I don't mind the cartridge. Annoyed me at first, but got over it quick.

the cartridge threw me off a bit at first. Now I think it's pretty slick. I put a flex tube on the plastic drain adapter. The tube directs the oil right into my empty jug. A small size oil filter wrench (cap style) fits over the housing. Honestly it's a better design... as has already been explained.

The Walmart here carries the Toyota brand EOM filters for $7. They're a little cheaper than any of the better spin on filters but it doesn't save enough to pay for the special wrench to install them.

OEM Toyota canister filters are $4 ish at Amazon..K&N are $7

Again..I bought this kit....for the metal housing..now I'll have a spare

along with the wrench which I did not have

I still think it will be a PIA...especially with dropping skid plate to access filter

That so called skid plate on a Highlander is just plastic. It might stop some flying debris but not a skid

I have an RCI skid plate with access door for the filter. Makes filter changes quicker, not to mention better protection.

Another +1 for the PITA factor.
Thanks for the tip on the aftermarket skid plate.

While I’m bitching, I also want to mention how those devious little pricks designed drivers side exhaust cross over EXACTLY at the front drivelines rear u-joint!!! In doing so, it “necessitated” a stupid little heat shield that needs removal. Someone at Toyota’s engineering department needs a strong kick in their tiny crotch.

Love the Toyota filter for a below engine mounted filter at least. It keeps everything clean. The removal of the damn “skid” plate on my Tundra sucks. Same as on my wife’s Infiniti. Hers has a sheet metal channel to catch the oil and direct it down, otherwise it would be all over a cross member...smart thinking there....

My Ford 6.0 with the oil filter on top of the engine us my favorite though. No mess. Ratchet and a step stool is all that’s needed.

I hate those damned things. Luckily it seems Toyota got so many complaints about them that on my 2018 Camry they went back to a spin on filter. I still have to put up with the one on my Tundra, hopefully when they redesign it they'll go back to a spin on filter. It turns a clean 15 minute job into a 30 minute messy job trying dealing with the special tools, the goofy plastic drain gizmo that only seals half the time, and replacing several O rings. Dumbest design ever.

Apparently not. This one fits 07-20 Camry.

I think both options were released, though I don’t know the criteria for why. Our 2017 Corolla has a spin on can. And to Toyota’s credit (proof they CAN engineer things correctly when they want to), the drain plug and filter are located closely enough that one drain pan will catch everything. Oil changes are fast like they should be.

I can assure you that won't fit a 2018 camry with the 2.5L engine because I've changed the oil myself in mine multiple times and it uses a spin on filter that I've bought from the Toyota dealership. My 2014 camry did use that filter and my 2016 Tundra uses a larger version of that.

Your information is wrong.

It appears that the spin on fits the 4 cyl and the cartridge fits the 6 cyl. It's the same with the Highlander 4 or 6 cyl.
