Dont judge him too harshly by today's standards. America at the turn of the last century was a vastly different place from today, and many of the social and political ideas and movements mentioned above were in their infancy. Socialists at the time were trying to break free of the depressed squalor that the industrial revolution had created for unskilled urban workers. There was no social security, no welfare, no income tax, no antitrust law, no child welfare law, etc. Eugenics and other quasi-sciences such as phrenology were promoted and believed by many because there was no rigorous scientific process in place to show their invalidity. Come to think of it, now we have all those things and people still believe in many of them, including unproven quasi-science, read Anthropological Global Warming. Arrgh! That said, Martin Eden is to Jack London as The Fires of Spring is to James Michener--a coming-out novel completely different than the rest of the author's body of work. I read it first in my salad days and thought it was very powerful. It does show some of the roots of his socialism and his depression as well. Glad its not the only thing he wrote.

Between the railroads, meat packers, and steel factories, it was hell on labor in those days. The unions were needed to get some kind of relief for the workers. The problem was that once the problems were solved, the unions never went away. They just kept asking for more and more.

For more info, read some of Upton Sinclair or maybe 'The Octopus' by Norris. They got real deep into the need for labor reform.

I read “To build a Fire” as a pre-teen—and never forgot its lessons.
I personally know a young man who it happened to.

Read several of his books and short stories in my youth. Took my first trip to the Yukon in 2013 to hunt Dall sheep and read Call of the Wild and a White Fang on the trip. Nothing like reading London's Yukon stories while camped at an old gold strike site in the Yukon wilderness. Have a picture of the bronze bust of him on the Main Street in Whitehorse a couple blocks from the Yukon River. Read Sea Wolf when I got home.

Progressives really aren't any different today. They all believe they are smarter than even the collective mind of the population.
