You may have had one of these:

As a non IT person there may be a setting that controls this sort of thing....

If you clean your cookies and browser internet files all the passwords and user names will be gone until you enter them again. In Firefox there is a file which contains the list of all this data. If you delete this file by cleaning your internet files you must enter it all again.
