Hi All,
I am new to this forum and new to the rifle that I am asking the following question on. I recently inherited a Model 99 takedown rifle made in 1921 (according to the serial number) and in .30-30. My question involves the muzzle. On my rifle, the barrel has a very slight "step" down from where the front sight blade ends to the end of the barrel. This area is un-blued. Is this normal or has it been monkeyed with? Was the rifle supposed to have some sort of muzzle-break or compensator? If so, did Savage do this or is it after-market?

Thank You,
Phil

I would say it is after-market work. I don't know why you would turn down the end of the barrel.

Rick,

I seem to remember an urban legend about some factory Savage rifles having noise suppressors. Especially in the '20s. Any comment?

The ones I have seen screwed onto the barrel. The barrel end was threaded and was protected with a screw on cap. I thought about that but the post didn't indicate threads.

Without seeing it, two things come to mind and one thing I am sure of, it has been monkied with....that cut was probably made to remove a burr or injury from whatever....it could have been the beginning of a recoil reducer gone bad...

At any rate it can be sleeved and soldered easily and you could hardly see it..
