Home Forums Hunting & Shooting Alaska Looking for an old Alaska hunting book similar to Buckingham or Rutledge

Now I know that the subjects of said hunting would be completely different. The most dangerous thing those gentlemen tended to encounter was diamonback rattlesnakes and gators, but I thoroughly enjoy my collection of their writtings. I would like to find something in a similar style relating to hunting in Alaska.

Any suggestions? I am looking for something older, certainly not a modern story.

There are quite a few you might like. Off the top of my head "From Out of the Yukon" is obviously nor Alaskan, but it is an interesting read. Quality of writing is NOT at the level you list, but that is rare. I cannot get at my books right now to list more.

I would say Annabell but a lot of his stories are set in Mexico.

Russell Annabell. He was in sports afield when I was a kid and I had a subscription. I always thought he wrote more of the north than mexico

Russell Annabell's writing about Alaska was superb. His later writings in Mexico are so-so.

As stated prior, Trophies Won and Lost is a great place to start

Russell Annabel is by any account one of the most colorful and controversial characters ever to set foot in Alaska. Born in 1904 in Tacoma, Washington, Rusty moved to Alaska as a teenager and quickly made a name for himself as a top guide. Early on he hooked up with the legendary Tex Cobb, another character of the Alaskan bush. Rusty soon started writing stories about hunting in the Northland, mainly for Sports Afield. Notes:

One might try AbeBooks.com and search up books by Selous and some others by Sheldon. Around the 1904,5,6 era and more Yukon territory. Another interesting read is a book called Nunaga Ten Years of Eskimo Life, Hudson Bay experiences working for the company. Some good reads as well on ship wrecks etc during the early whaling/explorations era in the Arctic. Lots of old books, often inexpensive, and many wth free shipping. Since retirement I've started filling shelves with old exploration, hunting, and seafaring volumes. Abe's is really book a broker serving sellers from all over the world, and I've found books published back in the 1800's still at very reasonable cost. Get into the really rare stuff though and one can spend serious bucks.

Start cross referencing from citations during ones sessions, and lots of other good reads will show up.

A very good book and it is available from Amazon. I'm waiting on the Kindle version. Understand the publisher had problems with the electronic version and it will be later.

that book aint cheap

I think Abe Books has a reprint for under 20 bucks. I get a lot of books used from B&N for 1.99 plus a few $ shipping.
