I remember isaac saying something to you along the lines of what you did for a living . You asked him if he had ever made /produced anything of value in his life - no answer from him .
I don't remember the exact wording but something along those lines .

If an EMP or astroid event happened bloomberg types would be dead in short order .

Pretty certain I know which way the machinist/mechanic types lean, but curious about the farmers. For the sake of this, by "farmers" I mean the big, commecial farmers, not the Mom and Pop veggie farmers with a produce stand.

Democrats !

An after-thought. Compared to farmers, machinists do! Starting with a 40 hour work week. and hell, they only need to turn something in the direction of the arrow. Farmers gotta find the arrow first.... smile

You will enjoy this.
Engineer (and I respect a good one) wants to use the mill.
OlPhart lead man.....”Nope. My shop you aren’t trained”

I took shop in high school!!!!!

“Okay.....go”

Hangs the end mill out a mile. Winds it way up in speed.......and cranks into the work.

Bridgeport.........climb mill......end of story for the end mill.

OlPhart...”Go away.....you are not trained......never ask again”

But he turned the handle to the arrow. ....or what ever Bloomberg said

Yes the machinists all watched. .........half of them needed a cigarette afterwards it was so good.

It was 30 years ago. Still clear in my mind. Mike standing there calmly saying ....”go ahead”

When mike had his arms crossed something was up.

He may be old but he didn’t miss much.

The vise was back and the table to the left.

He knew the guy would want to show off and get it done quickly. God has a sense of humor. Setup was there.

The table going from left to right with the cutter in front of the part.

He got to it and it tried to “climb” over the workpiece.

Weakest link is the fuse in any circuit.

End mills was the weak link.......and they don’t die quietly.

Great shop. Mike had your back. If you screwed up......HE took care of it. If you didn’t do it again he respected you for working to be better and it wasn’t mentioned again.

Learned a lot there.

Las......I’ll be up to Bethel in the next year. Giving machinist lessons.

My first time in Alaska!!!!!!

I got a job working for a family owned CNC machine shop. The shop worked 10 hours a day and so we started earlier than the office people.
I figured parking would be first come first served.
There was a small black top area close to the building so I parked there. I was told to park in the mud farther away because the blacktop was for office people. Even though they started later in the day?

Turning the handle to the arrow is the easy part. The hard part is doing the work in the correct order to minimize time, waste, and expense.

Same thing in wood working. I'm no carpenter, but I can make sawdust. I'd starve as a carpenter or woodworker.

Had to do a quality audit on some V-8 aluminum heads. I was checking a critical area for gas bubbles in the casting. 3" facemill with six diamond tipped inserts, 4500rpm, 220ipm feedrate. Depth of cut was .039" with a total of seven cuts. I'd have to open the doors on the CNC mill after each cut to check for gas bubbles, plot their location and chart size and depth. Machine sounded like a wood chipper. [bleep] can happen quickly at those speeds... 😛
