After years of working my way though different lever guns, I'm finally thinking of acquiring some Marlins. To be honest I've avoided them in the past because I'm not a huge fan of the butt stocks on them. But I picked up an 1895GS a couple years ago and have shot it a lot in the last year. It has wooed into wanting to explore Marlins. So as a start I've decided I want to pick up a 36 or 336 in .35 remington. I've been doing research but have a couple of questions I can't find the answers to and am hoping you guys can help.

First, when did the factory start installing sling studs on these? Second, when where these factory D/T for scopes? It looks like the early ones have "waffle" top which would not have come factory D/T, is it as simple as if the top of the receiver isn't waffled it would have come D/T?

All depends on the model of a 336 some came from the factory with sling studs some didn't the older Deluxe 336's came with super grade sling swivels, drill and tap started in 1958 I think,some were waffle top some were just smooth top.Back in the day you could send a Marlin back to the factory and they would D/T it for you

P.S. in your search for Marlins don't ever pass on one in .32 Spl. if the price is right.

After the waffletop they had a “shiny top” for a few years before they were drilled and tapped. 1958 sounds about right for d&t. Brophy has some good info in his book.

I "THINK" they started drilling and tapping in 1956, it was near that year, anyway. I'm pretty sure that they didn't put in swivel studs as a standard until the 1980s, but that's just a guess. I know I had to add studs to my 1960 336 on my own. I don't shoot mine enough to bother loading ammo for it, but it shoots well enough to kill deer, which is what it was made for, anyway.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm pretty excited to pick out which 336 I want for the first one. Also excited about .35 Remington, I don't have anything chambered in it yet. If the right .32WS comes along that would be acceptable too, but I already have several rifles in that round.

The book came today. Wow, what a detailed and comprehensive book. Really glad I bought a copy. Wish there was a similar one for Savages.
