Does anyone have a dimension handy for the barrel thread diameter and pitch of a pre-64 Winchester Model 70? Thanks!

Yes one inch diameter and 16 TPI. Buy yourself of Bolt Action Rifles by Frank DeHaas, any edition, it has lots of bolt action rifle barrel shank specs.

Thanks! I thought it was slightly smaller than a large ring Mauser thread. I just bought a new, unfired .264 Mag Mod 70 barrel that's never been fitted to an action, and I'm planning to machine the original thread off, rethread, and fit it to a MK X receiver. I've had a 6.5 Rem mag chamber reamer for a long time, one that Dave Manson custom ground with about a 1/4" over length COAL. That allows me to seat bullets even with the base of the neck, not pushed way back into the case to meet short action dimensions.

That will not rethread to an Interarms model 98 as they are one inch by 12 TPI. You either need a turk mauser or a Remingto 700 barrel, unless your barrel has enough unthreaded shank to cut off and thread from scratch.

ETA: Ooops sorry about that, wrong dimension as shown below. Either way it won't work.

1.10"x12 tpi.

HRL, you might be better off just starting with an unchambered blank.

I'll be machining most of the original thread off, just leaving a short extension behind the Mauser thread to mate with the inner shoulder. The remaining full diameter shank is sufficient length to turn the Mauser thread, and that will also eliminate the coned breech area. It looks like I'll lose a little over 3/4" of total length. That will also shorten the full length chamber sufficiently to recut it for the short-action case length of the 6.5 Mag brass. This (new) old barrel has been on the shelf for decades, and I'm getting it for about 1/3 of the price of a new barrel blank.

Yes, I believe so. That's one thing I'll need to check as soon as the barrel arrives. I'll be using bullets 140 grains or lighter, so I won't need a fast twist to stabilize the heavy stuff. A friend who ran a computer simulation of some of the proposed bullet/powder combinations I'm considering projects speeds up to 3200 FPS or a little more with 120 grain bullets without getting into dangerous pressure territory. I've chronographed some 100 grain JHP's from my 6.5-06 at 3400, but that's pushing the envelope a bit. They do turn a groundhog or a crow into a red mist, however!

If it's a factory barrel then it's certainly not worth 1/3 the price of a new custom barrel. A top shelf custom barrel can be had for about $325, even new a factory barrel is worth $50 tops and I wouldn't give you that for it.
