262 head stolen from one ranch. frown

Texas Cattle Rangers are on the case.

Lazy 11 brand on left shoulder.

Quote
PERRYTON, Texas — Information about the theft of 262 head of cattle off a Lipscomb County ranch just got a lot more valuable.

Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association Special Ranger Ben Eggleston said rancher Bob Adcock has added $10,000 of his own money to the $1,000 reward offered by Operation Cow Thief.

The reward will be paid to an individual who provides information leading to the arrest or indictment of the person or persons responsible for the crime. Eggleston said all information is kept confidential, and tips may be provided anonymously by calling 888-830-2333.

On Feb. 18, Adcock reported the steers and heifers missing from the Bill Merydith Ranch located at 14135 County Road U in Perryton. He said most of the cattle were black, but some were red and other mixed colors. They weighed between 500 and 550 pounds each. All are branded with a Lazy 11 on their left shoulder.

“Any theft, but especially one of this magnitude, can just be devastating to a rancher,” Eggleston said. “If you know something about this crime, please come forward so we can help him recover those animals.”

I assume these are 6 month old calves at that weight. Probably 4 to 5 semi loads. I hope they can track them down.

Dang, you just don't load out that many head in a short time, unless a lot of planning went into the job. Gonna be hard to cover up that brand too.

That 4 Corners area has always been a target for cattle thieves.

By the time they discover the cattle missing they could be in any number of other states.. and those states have their own brand laws/registration.

You would think he cattle sale barns would know if someone brought in cattle, if they were proper owners?

They do. Problem is, these aren't going to auction.... In Colorado, every single head of livestock that goes thru a sale barn here, is brand inspected, and has to show proof of ownership.

Looking at the age of these calves, they looked fresh branded as well.

Makes it much easier to rework the brand into one that has been previously registered...

A Lazy 11 brand can be reworked very easily into just about anything. Diamond Bar, Pair of 7's connected, etc.

I note there was no time frame, but that is one bunch of missing stock.
Enough people had to be involved to keep it under hat for long.
11 grand big ones will take care of the tongue with the answer.
Surely word will go out to all Cattlemen's Associations and COOPs in the region and US of A.

Those calves may wind up in a feed lot somewhere, may be processed in a mobile butcher system and already sold, and one forum wondered about an inside job. Who knows? Nobody but the perps at the present time.

That's good, barns here in Kansas, and I can think of 2-3 within 100 miles of me, don't all have brand inspectors anymore.

That's a chunk of cattle, you would think unless there going to a farm finish deal surely somehow they'll turn up, KLMA here would have sent out a notification but I don't guess feedlots and packers get or care about the notifications on stolen cattle. Sad situation.

Brand inspectors have access to all feedlots, auctions, or packing companies. It's up to them to keep tabs. Usually the brand inspectors are the ones that notify all the places about what to look for.

Lots of states have to be brand inspected before being shipped anywhere, and that inspection receipt must accompany the cattle to the destination.

Rock, unfortunately KS must not require brand inspectors at every sale barn, unless it's changed. Brand inspectors can go wherever they want but you can sell cattle at several barns that don't have them unless they show up on there own. The KLMA puts out faxes and emails informing all the sale barns of the stolen cattle but years ago lots of them were sold in Dodge City when they had 10,000 head runs, no inspector, but usually someone showed up on big bunches. Not sure about the states that require brand inspection receipts with the cattle but they have to have health papers to cross state lines.

I hope they catch the thieves. That still ought to be a hanging offence.

About 25 or 30 years ago in a town just west of us named DeKalb, Texas had a couple rustlers. The 2 brothers that owned the cattle got there before the deputies. They had 1 swingging when deputies got there just in time to cut him down. The ebony rustlers got arrested and 1 owner brother got arrested for assault. Ended up everyone got out of the charges. To this day the 1 that that swung still has a ring around his neck from rope burn.

that's a hell of a loss!
we lost 3 pair last summer in the high graze. that is bad enough. cant imagine losing hundreds. that could very likely bankrupt a outfit.
I would supply the hemp. hate a thief worse than anything.

I think more along the lines of properly sized post holes within a ring so the would be within sight each other.
Access to all the water needed and the establishment of a few new fire ant beds/berms.

Correct me if I am wrong, but that had to be the work of professionals.

Here in the Midwest there is no branding
A lady up the road from me lost 20 head of 600 lb calvs that were on corn stalks....that happened last fall and they haven't turned up...if the went to a sale barn it would be impossible to identify them as hers...no doubt the got blended in with a batch and sold so where or went to a feed lot...
