Properly set up and tuned, they will do, today, what no 12 gauge would do 20 years ago.
Lighter to carry and today's HTL shotshell technology allows the 20 to be NASTY lethal on turkeys to the 40 yard line with ease.

Opinions on the 20 for turkey please Have taken turkeys out to a measured 47 yards with Federal Heavyweight #7 shot. No trick to it. A red dot makes patterning the gun easy and deadly.

With the advent of TSS the 20 ga can do things today that it never dreamed up years ago! I have a 20 g 870 with a Carlson 575 choke tube and I use 3 inch Federal TSS #9's and it's flat out awesome on turkeys!! But be advised, those TSS shells are EXPENSIVE to the tune of about 6 dollars per shell in the 20 ga but IMO, ammo is the cheapest part of a hunt!! Good luck!

I shoot the old Federal Heavyweight 7’s from mine, it’s a 50yd gun with them. I doubt I’ll ever carry my 12 again.
When I die I hope I don't start voting democrat.

I would have no issue shooting to 60 yards with my 20 gauge stroked with a 1-5/8oz load of #9 TSS.

Sumtoy Customs is your one stop 20 gauge performance shop.
Send William your barrel...…………..a tad late for THIS spring season's use...……….and it'll come back shooting LIGHTS OUT.

No problem even with standard 3" mag. Nine year old grandson took one at 40 yrds with a .410. Bigger is not always better. GW

It's what I use the most. Rem 870 Express, 26" barrel, Primos Jelly Head Choke tube, 3" Hevi-13 #6 shot. Have shot them out to 49yds, dead, dead, dead.

The only time I carry my 12 is if one of the kids along is using my 20.

Ditto. When I run out of the FWH #7s in 3 or 4 more years, then I'll probably start using TSS.....

I got the .20 ga bug a couple of years ago after getting tired of humping heavy 12/16 gauges around and putting up with their recoil.
After much research I ended up with a Turkish made, Mossberg branded SA 20 “Turkey Thug”. Camo stock, auto loader, short barrel with very good ghost ring rear and front fiber optic sights.
It comes sling equipped and is drilled and tapped for mounting optics.....that was a biggy for me. After using it with both a red dot reflex sight and the factory fiber optics......I tossed the red dot aside.
It come with a turkey choke, but I added a couple of Carlsons in modified and IC.....for upland game and steel shot use. Like the other posters have been saying, newer 20ga turkey loads make the 20 a real killer! BT53

It’s a 125 average at 42yds from my 870 youth and a colonial arms .570. The Primos Tightwad shoots great from mine also.
When I die I hope I don't start voting democrat.

330-350 in the 10” at 40 yards. I’ve killed a few when I misjudged range at a layered 56 yards. 1 5/8 tss load

I have killed 26 gobblers in the past 6 years with my 20ga's. My kids have each killed several with the 20. Since I started hand loading TSS none of my 12ga's will ever see another spring. Watched my son kill a gobbler at 49 steps with the 20 and TSS 9 shot, it has made the sub ga guns lethal …..
Don't gobble at me

A 1960's vintage 870 with fixed factory full choke barrel and Federal 1 1/8 ounce loads of copper plated 7 1/2 shot accounted for a truck load of spring gobblers for me. Just pattern the gun and load and call them into that range.
With this new non-toxic shot available it should be even better.
