Nephew wants a 308 Browning. I looked their web site and saw the ss stalker model. Looking at the specs it has a 1:12 twist. What weight bullets will work the best with a 1:12 twist? I should add that he lives in Colorado around Denver and wanting to hunt elk.
Thanks for your help

Deans IME, 150’s through 180’s all work great in a 1-12” twist 308.

Should be fine. Would fall short with the heavies but that shouldn't be an issue for elk hunting

Yes a 1-12" is fine for bullets to 180 grains and you'll find a 308 can fire bullets heavier, but they don't actually do anything better then 180s because a 308 doesn't have powder enough to drive them to a speed they will out penetrate a good 180 grain. I have killed elk with my 308s in the past and used bullets of 150 165 and 180 and if you buy one that holds together they all kill elk fine. The 150s often will not exit but 165s do many times ,and good 180s do most times. So no worries if you get a 1-12. You'll have a good elk rifle

I'm shooting 185 Bergers (#30513) in my 1:12 Rem 700. Very accurate. Only pushed it to 500 or so, but they are shooting very well. And I'm below 1,000' elevation.

Thanks guys. I prefer a 1:10 twist in a 308/30-06 barrel. Just wasn't sure about 1:12.
Thanks again.

I actually used a 1-8T for my last .308 Win build and really like it!
It shoots 110gr to 168gr Bullets with equal accuracy and actually gives me faster velocity.
Given the choice, I will use an 8T barrel from now on. At the least, a 10T Barrel.
I hope more and more companies jump on the fast twist band wagon.

What is the point in using a fast twist barrel with short, stubby bullets? GD

Nosler partition 165, or many others.

My pet rifle is Model 70 (New Haven) short action with a 24-in 3 groove Dan Lilja barrel. I agree with what all have said regarding 150-165-180 but I would stay with the 150's & 165's - just about all the modern bullets need a minimum of 1800fps to perform on the terminal end. However, the long range Accubonds are designed to expand as low as 1300fps so that might work long and short for him. BTW, the 150 Hornady ELDX needs a minimum of 10-twist so I wouldn't spend much time trying to get that to work - just MHO.

Zombie post but I prefer 1:12 on my 308s. 1:12s shoot 200s just fine but I stick with mild 150s at 2700 for recoil mitigation

Were I going out tomorrow to build a 308 I'd specify a 1-11", mostly because it would twist up the fast twist crowd. Also, having owned both 1-10" and 1-12" 308's, and knowing there's little to no practical difference between them, the 1-11" is the perfect compromise. Thus endeth the lesson

Wouldn't give it a second thought, regardless.
Most accurate .308 I ever owned was a Kimber Longmaster, with IIRC, a 1-12". Like the man said, with a .308, you run out of gas tank before you reach the point where any of the "standard" twists would become an issue. Cast bullet guys might prefer 1-12", but I'm not sure that really matters either.
What fresh Hell is this?
