I have a beautiful German sporting rifle. I’ve been told it was a WWII bring back. It’s chambered in 30-06 and has a double set trigger. It has a nice short lever removable scope mount. The scope has the German post reticle. Can anyone here help give me any details on what I truly have? Is this a guild rifle? There’s no names or crests or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I can’t figure out how to embed pics, but the links are below.)

Sure looks like a "Guild" gun. Look for some of the proof marks, they should give you a year range of when it was proofed and made. (city or region).

Looks to have been built on a military action, from the presence of the thumb slot in the left receiver wall.

I doubt it is a WWII bring back. More like a post war build.

But to get a more definitive answer you would have to pull the barreled action from the stock and post pics of the markings. Those will help narrow down the time frame in which the rifle was built and or rebarreled. A good many sporters that were originally made in 8x57 were rebarreled to .30-06 by servicemen who were familiar with the '06 before they returned stateside.

I’ll pull it out of the stock tonight and post pics of the marks under the receiver. There aren’t any on the barrel.

It may have come from the same factory but there is no crest and it hasn’t been scrubbed off either.

A lot of "war trophy" (aka stolen) civilian sporters in 8X57 chambering were rechambered by reloaders to 8MM-06 to use GI surplus -06 brass. That eliminated problems with trying to reload Berdan-primed German ammo. My 8MM-06 uses the same load data as .338-06.

The G.24(t) marking identifies it as a vz24 produced after the German "Annexation" of Czechoslovakia in WWII. The (T) standing for the German spelling of Czechoslovakia = Tschechoslowakei.

So, yes, the crest was scrubbed along with the Nazi Eagles and original SN. I suspect the 1102-49 was the date of conversion.

Thanks for all your info. Any ideas on the scope or mount? And any idea what this is worth?

No idea on the scope mount, any number of makers were producing these around that time to include Echo, Jaeger, and G&H later. The scope appears to be a Hensoldt 6x. Worth? In today's market, not near what you'd probably hope for. To the right person, the scope & mount might be worth more separated than as a package with the rifle.

A forend that long would be really unusual on a pre-war gun. It was probably commissioned by an American stationed in Germany, which was pretty common in those days since sporting rifles were really expensive in the US. I'd also have a chamber cast made to confirm that it's really a 30-06.

You are missing the point that it can't be a pre-war gun since the action itself was made DURING the war. But yes, the styling cues are all wrong, definitely a post war stock and build.

Well, I’ve had a lot of people look at this rifle. But the most help came from Brad Simpson at Simpson’s collectibles in Galesburg Illinois. He helped confirmThat it is indeed a ”cigarette rifle”, manufactured most likely in 1949. The action is a G24(t) action made 1938-42. Scope is assembled from Hensoldt parts, scope mount is an improved German sniper scope design.

Yup. I didn’t doubt you, but more info is always good.
