With the fieldcrafts going away (hopefully temporarily) I'm going to pick one up. Found a good deal and they have both the chamberings I want, 243 or 6mm C, in stock. Which would you pick and why? I know its splitting hairs a little bit. Going to be using factory ammo for now, and primarily for deer/antelope. Any issues with shorter/lighter .243 factory bullet loadings in the 1:7?

factory ammo has a lot more options in .243 ... but 6mm creed has hornady factory ammo loaded with the 105 hpbt. and thats a real momma jomma. i wouldnt turn down either one but once the creed has a little more support i think itll be the superior offering.

The Creed may be slower to erode the throat.

In general, if you buy the 6MM CM, you won't run into any of the COAL limits that you might with the longer 243 cases if you decide that you want to shoot the longer/heavier VLD, high BC, bullets at some point in the future.

Never saw any 105 offerings from Hornady in factory ammo, however I have seen 103 and 108.

I picked up a 6mm CM, I do plan to reload depending on how accuracy I get from factory offering. I hate buying new dies, etc.

The 105 HPBT is loaded in the Hornady Black line. It's available from Midway and probably others.

I have a fast twist 243 shooting 105s, and I love it. Having said that, when I shoot out this barrel, I will switch to the 6 creed. As mentioned above,it is better suited for shooting long bullets, as most 243 magazines won't allow a long bullet to be seated far enough out where it needs to be. Also, you shouldn't have to trim necks as often with the creed. If you plan on shooting "average" bullet weights between 75 and 100 grains, just get a 243. My son has a tikka 243 shooting 95 gr nosler bt and it shoots incredibly good. Not as good as my custom, but close. He whacks the 500 yd steel all the time with it. I think the barrel life between the 2 will be fairly close. I think I should get between 2200, and 2500 rounds on my current barrel. Have about 1200 on it now.

Go with 6 CM if starting from scratch, i.e.: reloading and factory ammo.

I've worn out a couple 243s and now have two Fieldcraft 6CMs......much prefer the 6CM!
The CM seems to be much friendlier to load for. Any of the long bullets and RL16 shoot very well.

The Kreedmire wins by default and by a goodly margin,as over the counter fodder goes. There's never been a Retard Twist Rate Kreed built and Retard 243 Win's remain a staple,for everyone but Barrett. Hint.

Stick, in one of your pics you have a RUGER American in 6 Creedmoor is that a good shooter? Is it a std. Magazine model or something else? MB

I have both, a 6 in the FC, and a .243 Howa Alpine. I bought the Alpine because it was on sale and I have a bunch of brass and stubby .24 cal bullets. If I ever shoot it out, guess what it'll become? Same situation as the .260/6.5 CM drama. The old one's fine, but there's no logical reason to begin with it if the rifle you want is available in the new one.

Given the current state of the FC, you might want to jump on the first good deal you find on either.

Well I have this old late 70's M700 BDL IN 243 WIN, had it since 1980 and the barrel is starting to go. I have other 243 Wins and there is no real need to rebarrel it to the same.. I thought 243 AI but read to many negative comments on it or 6mm Rem. Looks like the smart money would be a tight twist 243 barrel for the 6 Creedmoor or the 22 Creedmoor. Does a guy need a longer mag box for these 2 Creedmoor cartridges? MB

Creedmoor for the factory ammo to go with the 1:7 twist.

.243 for the factory ammo at every corner store.

Thanks for the thoughts and great info and experiences. I'm going to put in my order for a 6mm C. today... Now to decide on the scope... Fortunately, I've got a bunch of options in that department.

Anyone shooting the 6mm C barnes LRX load? 95 gr I believe. I've had good accuracy with the 6.5 C version, but havent killed anything with it yet. Killed plenty with the "old fashioned" TTSX though. Always been happy with performance of those
