I just was given a 660 by my mom in law . Any suggestions on optic mounts ? I would mainly target shoot possibly to 300 yards . Scope suggestions appreciated also. The rifle is in excellent condition. I see some grease on the inside of the bolt , I thought oil was supposed to be the main lube. I haven't had a chance to disassemble yet. Any help appreciated.

Any Remington Model 7 or XP-100 1-peice mount will work, be it of the dual-dovetail, weaver rail, or alloy 1pc (DNZ-style). There are also 2-piece mounts available for the later-generation Model 7 (four total screw holes) that will fit, but the 600/660 series only had one screw hole in the rear bridge (total of 3 screw holes). Lots of folks get by with just the one screw in the back, or take the mounts to a smith and have the rear bridge tapped for a second screw. That's what I did with my 660, so I could use M7 Talley Xtra-low alloy 2pc mounts and get a very low mounting height. My father's 600 was not modified for a 4th screw, and it wears the Leupold 1pc steel XP-100 dual dovetail setup. It's heavier, but sturdy.

I have Weaver or Weaver-style one-piece bases on my 600/660s. The 600/660 rear bridge is flat on top, rather than rounded like the other 700 series actions, but the difference in contour is very small so they work fine.

The best accessory that you can buy for a 600/660 Remington is the alloy bottom metal that Willie Manning at CVMW makes.

Willie's alloy unit is much nicer, IMO, than the steel unit that GPC sells for around $150.

I've been shooting my 600 since 1966 and the weaver one piece works just fine.

I prefer the 1 piece mounts myself. A Leupold 2.5-8 is a perfect scope for them.

There is only one screw hole in the real bridge so your pretty much restricted to a one piece mount.

I put a one piece rail from EGW on my mohawk, since it just had the 3 holes. It was the xp100 model. I like it, its pretty light and gives you a lot of options as far as scope positioning

You can do the 1 pc weaver and run as is or remove some of the aluminum over the ejection port.

If you wanna run cross slot rings.

A Leupold 3-9x EFR is what I had on my last 600.

I like the old Tasco BM-722 one-piece bases for use with Weaver and Weaver-style rings on 700 SAs and 600/660s because they are blued steel, not extruded alloy.

A little caution is in order regarding some one-piece mounts for the 600/660.. Be sure that the mount doesn't extend forward beyond the receiver, unless it's relieved a little on the underside. IIRC, the 600/660 had a unique recoil lug which unlike a 700 recoil lug, protrudes above the the receiver. FWIW, my 600/660s have Redfield one-piece mounts 'from back in the day.'

You are correct, the recoil lug on the 600/660 series extends above the contour of the receiver to recoil lug to barrel interface and, IIRC, the bases made specifically for the 600/660 series rifles do extend ahead of the receiver and are slotted to accommodate the raised recoil lug. Someone told me that this design was intended to better handle the recoil on the 600/660s chambered in 350 REM MAG. I have a one-piece Weave tip-off base and ring set that came on a used 660 that I bought and it extends forward over the barrel and is slotted to fit over the raised recoil lug.

Whenever I rebarrel 600/660s, I use a regular 700 series recoil lug that allows for a smooth contour of the barrel to recoil lug to barrel interface.

guys the suggestions are great and a lot of help , pics cool (the transformation into a modern rifle, wow) . keep em coming. another question what kinda torque did you put on the action screws? the trigger has the "V" so it looks like the recall is done. I don't know how you posted the large picture files.

Mines about as modern as I want, mine gets lots of attention come oct/nov.

I thought the lug sticking up was a carryover from the ribbed 600 models.

Recoil stop for magnum scope bases?

Dunno hook, told the Smith to use the factory lug when I went from 243 to 6ai.

Being a belt/suspended type, I would epoxy it fast also.
Bet it would be just fine.

A tad of heat, and the epoxy would come right off.
