Sad that it took the Navy two days to search for survivors. I do not think that is what was meant by the fact some survivors were in the water for two days... rather, they kept finding them for two days.

The other interesting thing is how much more effective the US Navy surface combatants had become by 1944. In 1942 battles around Guadalcanal, the IJN surface ships outfought the US Navy surface ships in the initial battles. Eventually, the US Navy got better, and the Samar battle shows how much they improved. In 1942, the Japanese were specializing in night battles and torpedo tactics. The US learned how to use radar at night and learned how capable the Japanese torpedoes were.

I didn't realize until I read Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors that that day (or the next?) was also the start of the Japanese kamikaze attacks. The navy had their mind on other stuff.
