All of this thread is why I gave up on Savage 24s after owning several. Bought my first 50 years ago at age 16, a .22 Magnum/20 gauge. The .22 barrel shot very well--and the 20-gauge barrel shot high enough that a few scattered pellets from the bottom of the pattern landed where the thing pointed.

Tried a few more over the years, which is why I eventually bought a genuine Sauer drilling, which patterned right where the iron sights aimed. I spent maybe a little more money than all expended during my years of trying to find a Savage that "regulated" correctly, but had TWO shots on birds....

Guess I got lucky. I've had two Savage 24's. Both put a pattern of shot pretty close to centered at 30 yards with the sights zero'd to put the rifle barrel dead on at 50.

I wanted one in 22 LR/20 gauge but opted for the 22 WMR/20. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Winchester makes a 22 WMR in sub-sonic. It shoots very well in my gun and is a nice alternative to the high velocity mag ammo that is so hard on squirrels.
