Hey All!
For some stupid reason I have been wanting a .410 side by side. Any decent ones that are affordable out there?
Any experience information would be helpful too.

Thanks, Tom

The most important thing to look for is fit. if it doesn't fit you, stop right there. Personally, I have never come across a gun with an English straight stock that fit me.

Second, is mechanical condition. Does it lock up nice and tight? Is it on face? If it a used gun, ask to shoot it. Are the ejectors timed properly?

Third, cosmetic condition. Has it been refinished? Any rust, Any cracks in the wood? Re-blued?

Last is price. Is it within your budget? Sometimes it is wise to stretch a bit in order to acquire really fine gun.

By example, a friend of mine found an L.C. Smith .410 sidelock gun built in 1920 at Kevin's in Thomasville GA. It fit him perfectly. Kevin wanted $10K for it and wouldn't budge, but he did say he would accept my friend's check. My friend wrote the check and took it home. He is absolutely deadly with it on quail. I have seen him make clean kills on quail at 40-45 yards. He wouldn't part with it even if offered twice what he paid. For him, it's the perfect shotgun.

Define affordable and we will be more able to help. If you look around, there are .410 sxs under $1,000 (older Stevens, for example) and others 50 times that (higher quality British sidelocks from name makers).

What about the newer Stevens sxs. Any experience with them?

The Stevens/Savage American sxs were discontinued years ago. That said, they were solid, though clunky. The 20s were the best handling and proportioned of the bunch. I'm talking about the 311 series.

The current Stevens SxS guns are Turkish I believe. I have great reservations on double guns from Turkey in that price bracket. The quality has improved greatly in the last couple decades but there is still far too much variance for my comfort. The store I work at carries the Stevens O/U and of the several that have gone out in the year we have carried them, 3 have come back with some sort of issue. One owner had their money refunded, another no word back, and the third is pleased so far.
The second buyer had his gun gone for three months, the third maybe a little less. To be fair, going through our store for repairs is rather onerous. The gun goes from us to our distribution center to the firearm distributor then to the manufacturer before returning the same way. This can add considerable time to the journey. It could be done differently but it is a corporate decision far above my pay grade.

I had bought a new Stoeger sxs 410 and the barrels weren't regulated well. Only one barrel was actually usable as the other shot too high and to the right.

I have and older Ranger (Stevens/Savage) that has had the stock varnished. Otherwise a great old 410 sxs if interested.

I use a CZ Bobwhite .410 SxS. The frame is sized for .410. Love it!

I know a guy with a Stevens 410 SxS that I'd buy in a heart beat if he'd sell it. My own 410 SxS is an AyA Matador. It's not made anymore I don't think but a really nice gun. I wouldn't let it go for anything.

There's something about handling and shooting a 410 on any properly sized shotgun platform. I have a very well made Savage Model 220, in 410. What a fun gun to handle and shoot.
Just pick up a nice Winchester Model 42 sometime. Very hard to put it down. What a beautiful pump shotgun !

I have a CZ Bobwhite twin trigger and straight grip .410. Nice little shotgun that is fun as heck to shoot. I even filled a limit of SD roosters on opening day back about 14 years ago as well as a couple of flying ruffed grouse here in BC. Only took 20 yard shots at pheasants where I could see their head/ring. Worked OK, but would have been severely under gunned after the first day and they wised up.

Also have a beautiful Winchester M42. Never hunted with it but shoot a few rounds of skeet once in a while. Again, a dandy fun shotgun.

It's too bad CZ doesn't offer the Bobwhite in 410 anymore.

I have a beautiful little Savage/Steven 311A in 410, one of the few years it came with a walnut stock. It was made in 1962,but is like new, bought it for $350 ten years ago. Solid build, little clunky, but fun to shoot.

Thanks Gentlemen!
I think I’ll look for a CZ. Seems to be what I’m looking for.

I know I'm late to the party, but I have one of those old Jon's Sports Shop CZ Bobwhites that they were pushing a few years back. Its choked modified and full. It's not a bad little shotgun for the price point. .410 sized frame, decent gloss bluing, and very plain, yet serviceable walnut. Thing points like a wand.

...patterns decent too, and both barrels are regulated pretty well. These were shot with Winchester AA 2-1/2" #7 shot. Speedy load at 1300fps. Works well for squirrels out to twenty yards or so.

Here are the patterns with the AA's at 20 yards. Circles are 9", and the black dot was the POA.

Full choked barrel:
