My wife grew up in a large family on a farm, few cows, few pigs, few this, few that, lots of kids. She claims she was 16 before she knew you could gut a deer in the daylight. That was in the 1970's. My dads family was dirt poor and if you saw a deer you shot it. They didn't get many, but enough to survive. Back then there was a lot more small game, birds and waterfowl. You've heard the stories, go to the hardware store buy 5 .410 shells, and you'd better come home with 5 animals. The main game getter was a Savage over under, in .410 and .22. One of his favorite stories was when was pretty young (10-12) he happened to stumble upon a decent buck in the woods without the deer noticing him first. He lined up on it and then couldn't decide if he should shoot in with the .22 or .410 (he had a slug in the gun). By the time he made up his mind the deer was tired of standing there and ran off. He couldn't even tell anybody he saw a deer as they would be upset that he didn't even shoot.

BTDT myself Don't you still go ? I don't know if there were any food banks around here when I was young and poor or not. Never asked, nor did I ever ask for any gov't handouts of any kind. I know there are food banks around now but pretty sure they rely on donated food, which I doubt like hell thy're going to be getting much of right now.

Food Bank, Geno?
BTDT myself hells yeah. couple of big russet taters in the bottom of the bag, some canned green beans I gave to the neighbor lady, usually a bag of rice and some pasta of some sort. Every once in awhile some Govt Cheese!. Fresh veggies in season. Was always good to find a box of mac and cheese too! Never any Fruit Loops though. Geno

I’m poaching Geno....Wouldn’t be right to be fishing legal and posting under this thread...Beav’s an outlaw!
Yes...It’s always open here for ponds. Streams, rivers for fresh run Cutts. Heck no. We have seasons for those tasty fish and a 2 a day limit. 😎

I use three Mepps spinners.
Black Fury, Red and White and Black and white.
If they wont bite on one of those three.....they were not interested in spinners.

Cutts are fun to catch, for sure. Geno PS, if you're poaching..........why stop at 4?

It’s a 6 to 6 bite here....6AM until 7AM and 6PM to dark they’re hitting most anything. In between, your throwing a lot to pick up a few.
