Our home made vegetable beef soup is a bit thinner, but basically the same. Just beef instead of all kinds of meat thrown in.

I agree with many that know a certain hot sauce might work well for some applications while others might be better for another dish. Burgoo or home made veggie soup is one of those that Huy Fong shriracha just simply turns on! A whole new dimension for me.

Thanks for the feedback and kind comments, gents.

The smoked ham definitely gave it a good smokey flavor. Mild, but noticeable. Same with the homemade BBQ sauce.

And like gunzo, I like a splash of hot sauce at the table. Haven't tried the cock sauce in my burgoo, but Frank's Xrta worked OK.

Well, I made it for the first time yesterday. I have to say, it came out much better than I expected and was actually really good. I loosely followed a recipe from Garden&Gun, which claims that it came from the Chef at Holly Hill Inn in Midway, KY. I don't know anything about any of them.

For meat, I used chicken thighs, beef, and some ham that I smoked. Also some sort of dry white bean, celery, onion, carrots, peas, corn, and potatoes. Recipe called for some A1 steak sauce, but I used a bit of homemade BBQ sauce.

Might not be authentic, if there is such a thing, but I'll definitely make it again.

The British Navy of the Napoleonic era served its sailors a lot of burgoo - but it was NOTHING like what you folks are describing. Naval burgoo was in fact not much more than a bowl of steel-cut oatmeal.

2 cups steel-cut oats
4 cups water
1 Tsp salt
3 Tbls butter
4 Tsp sugar

Bring oats and water to boil, reduce to simmer for 15 minutes, add salt, butter, and sugar before serving.

There are a lot of people who actually would consider that food.
