All,
A friend gave me a 22 HP takedown model to have a look at and clean it up a little. He is thinking of selling it and wondering what he should ask for it. I noticed when I looked at it there was a notch cut near the muzzle and what looked like something may have threaded on at one time. To me it looked like maybe a suppressor at one time. I was told that this last time the rifle was fired was around 1960 time frame. The bore is not in good condition. If anyone could shed some light on this I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Notch looks similar to the relief for a cross screw on a barrel band carbine........maybe a barrel band Manlicher?

Early 1899's threaded for suppressors do show up, the Maxim's were fairly popular. But they don't look like that.

Maybe somebody mounted a bayonet lug on it to go hunt tigers? grin

It has a groove filed on the bottomside of the barrel.

Yeah.. and the purpose of the groove is what? Probably to keep something firmly in place and oriented on the barrel. What would need to be attached to the end of the barrel that needs to be firmly secured and oriented? I don't know.. but a bayonet would need to be.

Most likely the groove was to attach a ring on the barrel for a loop for a sling. Does the stock have any holes for sling studs?

The stock has no swivels on it. The rifle dates around 1914 and appears to be all original and good shape except for a rough bore and broken butt plate. It looks like someone filed a notch underneath the barrel for whatever reason. Maybe to attach a flash suppressor?

Yes. I'm straining my brain and I can't remember when it was. But it looked just like that notch.

I've passed on several threaded rifles. I think I might get the next one I have a shot at. Then see if I can find a Maxim, and get the papers.

A couple of local suppressor shops told me that it's possible to get an adapter for Maxim threads that can be used to mount a modern suppressor. Or that custom threading could be done to a suppressor to fit it to existing threads - though that one's probably pricey.

I also think somebody was making a Maxim reproduction.

I've been watching for a reasonable one.

I picked up a 1899 30-30 threaded barrel years ago in a shop north of Troy ny . The owner said it came in with maxim in the box he told the seller to go throw that dam thing in the Hudson river.

Why would anyone want to buy a barrel that has a bad bore?

I think the only way to own a Maxim legally is if the original owner registered it when first required by law. It would then require that it be transferred from owner to owner down to you. I don't think you can even own a stripped one just for looks. And, there is no way to register once the chain is broken.

That was my thought also, then I reread his first post, I think he wants to sell the whole gun.

The first Savage I ever bought (1899 A) has that same groove. I took i t to the first Savage Fest. Nobody there had any idea...

I traded it to a neighbor for services rendered. If he still has it, I could provide photos. After the social distancing expires.

The bore on this rifle is toast. It is pitted and rusty. The owner wants to sell it but but is asking $1200 and I believe he's asking a tad to much. It has a broken butt plate but that can be replaced. I'm going to pass on it.
