Still looking for a boat. Hope to find one I can pay cash for. Is insurance necessary/desirable?
May yet purchase new and would certainly feel the need for insurance if I do.
When on the road with a trailered boat does your truck insurance cover liability concerns?
On the water is liability insurance necessary?
Thanks to all.

Boat insurance is pretty cheap...I wouldn’t be without it, the peace of mind is worth the expense, IMO.
Never considered not insuring mine so can’t answer to the legality of going “uninsured” but betting its no different than with an automobile.
I own a higher end 20ft ski boat(Bryant)...insurance is $250/yr.

I am able to add boats to my homeowners policy for liability coverage. In turn they are covered under my umbrella policy. The cost is minimal, either free or maybe $25 for the rider.
The only boat I have full coverage on is my houseboat, under $700 per year for up to $100,000 in damages.
In my opinion liability insurance is an absolute must. Too many things can go wrong on the water.

Car insurance covers the trailer but NOT the boat....
So boat insurance is required -but it is cheap as the guys said. I have USAA and they have a sub. Company that sells the boat insurance... just ask your insurance company for boat insurance and they’ll put you to the right place.

Don't leave home without it! If you have an accident while trailering your boat and have a gas spill you better have good insurance. Once while heading north on I-95 from North Carolina I came upon a 25' boat laying across 3 lanes of road, I can't imagine how they got that boat out of there. One good thing, I didn't see any gas leaking out. Last time I bought boat insurance it was under $250. Make sure you buy the insurance for the whole year and just not the on water boating season. Good luck.

I've nearly always had a boat, but never considered insuring it. It doesn't sound like a bad idea, however, in this litigious society today.

Seem to remember that the last time I had a boat it was covered on my homeowners. Long time ago, and I'll check out the possibilities with my insurance guy.
Thanks guys

Another thing to look into is an additional equipment rider for trolling motors, GPS, rods and tackle. Mines about 100.00 for 15,000.00 in coverage.

I use a company called anchor marine. http://www.anchormarineinsurance.com/Look into a “yacht policy”. It isn’t just for yachts, it’s a type of stated value coverage I can’t remember the details of at the moment, but it was recommended by many folks when I was insuring my boat. Being boat specialists, might be worth a call just to get an idea of what’s what.

I always have ins on a boat. One was stolen in '91 and the ins gave me a new one. Hit a stump in '17 and the ins rebuilt a 40 Yamaha from the ground up.

I have USAA and they sub mine to Progressive! Its cheap for the coverage. Around $250 a year! For a 20ft Alumaweld Intruder, river sled!

Just make sure you are getting what you think you are.
Don’t remember all the details.
5-6 years ago i had a bass boat. There was a catch in the coverage. Like it covered mechanical on the motor ( powerhead). But not damage on the lower unit. Running over something.
I had progressive.

+1 The more toys one acquires comes with more liability. It's foolish not to cover your azz considering the small costs involved. I have a 1M umbrella policy that covers all my toys and much more even including a possible shooting related death on my property. Your toys don't have to be on your property to be covered under such a policy. Talk to you insurer about possible enhancements to your homeowners insurance. Only affordable way to go about it...... Insuring piece by piece is just crazy.

Boat insurance is tricky. Dave is correct, it's best to read the fine print and know exactly what is covered. You might be surprised at what isn't covered.

Mine is a nearly new (3 years old now) Lund alaskan 1800 / 90hp ... with a ton of electronics on it... I was on progressive until USAA created their own boat insurance company “MARKEL”... and they moved me over to that. Maybe I’m a better insurance risk than you are ... HA!!

I have a 2013 Key West 20' dual console. I use USAA also and they sub it to progressive. I just checked and it's $208 a year which includes the "sign and glide" on water towing coverage if I have to get towed in on the water. I'm usually operating on the MS gulf coast and having to be towed from offshore can get expensive. That's for full coverage, liability, uninsured boater, comprehensive, and collision.
All in all I think it's a bargain for the peace of mind. I haven't had to use any of it so I can't comment on their service during a claim.
