Ok, Waders here is my new thread. grin A S&W model 66 that I've had for 46 years. It's seen lot of use but still looks and shoots great. Contrary to rumors it still tight and the frame hasn't cracked or sawed it's self in half. No I don't know how many rounds have been put through it, but I don't know how many rounds have been through any of my guns. blush In the last 15 years it's standard load has been 6.5 grains of Unique with 158gr SWC. The S&W K-frame, in it's many configurations, is one of my favorites. So here it is all cleaned up and picture taken.
Lets see yours and hear your stories.

Great gun! (Great pic of it too!)

I don't have a ton of experience with the Model 66, but here goes:

Here's a no dash 66, pinned/recessed, that I bought at a gun show from the original owner. I saw him checking it in at the door and we struck up a conversation about the gun. It was barely used. It had the box, original paperwork, and event the factory cleaning kit, still heat sealed in the little plastic bag. My buddy saw it and announced he was buying from me. For whatever reason, I went along with it and sold it to him.

I still own this one, a 66-1 with a 2.5" barrel, sitting with a Ruger SP101. I need to put new grips on it. Anybody have any suggestions for me at a price my wife will agree to?

Great looking 66. I bought a four inch for my wife many years ago and regrettably sold a 2.5 inch 66 before we moved to Alaska. Wish I had kept that one. She keeps hers in the nightstand or under the pillow when I'm gone.

If you're asking for a selling price on the 66, they have gotten pricey-- $750 plus, at least around here. I have seen 'asking' prices at $950-$1000.

Waders, your 66-1 looks like it's had an action job, that trigger looks comfy.

Oregon45, I to like that 3". very nice.

Mine has had a little work done to it, since it's an early models with stainless sights that are real hard to see. It has the front sight painted red and many years ago I put in a blued WO rear sight blade it. Has a spring kit in it and over the years has become very smooth.

Actually, I was asking for suggestions at what grips to get at an affordable price. I can't afford custom dinosaur bone and the like...

I went a lot of years wanting a 66. Unobtainable when I started getting serious about shooting. If I found the unicorn, I couldn't afford it.

When they started becoming available, I was deep into Rugers. After a couple decades, I ordered a 4" just because. It happened to be a dash 5 meaning it had all the performance or strength enhancements, but it didn't have the internal lock. I loved on the action a bit & bought some holsters for it. A gun for life.

What sort of price range did you have in mind, and what kind of material?

For K frames nothing works better for me than Magnas and a Tyler T. There’s another guy on the S&W forum making adapters too if you don’t want to wait on a Tyler. Magnas could be sourced relatively cheaply off EBay or the S&W forum.

My first handgun, got in trade for some work remodeling a house. Part of the deal was the guy taught me to reload and cast bullets.

Dash 1 with a couple thousand rounds through including a bunch of those hot H110/125 grain loads that are supposed to loosen them up. No internet at the time, so I didn’t know better;

With an accuracy load, it has hit clay pigeons out to 100 yrds. With H110 and a light bullet, it roars.

Only possible improvement would be an extra .5" of barrel.

My 66-2, I have had a couple long ago and once I got my 629 Mountain Gun, I sold the 66's. Then I shot a friend of mines 66 and started wanting one all over again. This was last summer and I was looking at $800-1100 on GB and a dealer I know said he couldn't find one for under $750 when he was looking for one. I walked into another gun shop and this one was sitting there as ugly as sin. Someone had put some kind of scope mount on it and what the mount didn't scuff up the owner scratched up but it was tight enough and the timing was still right. I bought it for $550 out the door, took it home and stripped it down then bead blasted it. Installed a Wolf spring kit and started shooting it. I won't be selling this one.

Finally found a 2.5" in my price range a couple years ago. Probably my favorite Smith. I find the round butt Smiths fit my hand and point the best of any revolver.
