I would appreciate any ideas or example pics of Remington Model Sevens. I am about to build one in .308. Is a Bartlein 2B too stout of a contour for a Model Seven action? I am looking to maintain a slim carbine style and finish barrel at 20”.

What stock are you looking at? That will help dictate the contour needed for balance. A 20" factory 700 sporter contour balances well in a light stock like an Edge. On the other end of the spectrum, I'd want to step up the contour a couple notches if going with a laminate.

That is one of my big questions. The McMillan site says that for the Model Seven they recommend their model seven stock which is a copy of the original and can only take up to a #3 contour. I would be open to considering a Remington classic edge or McMillan Hunter Edge. I just want it to look right and don’t won’t the action to be dwarfed by the stock. That is why I am hoping to see photos of what others have done with their Model Sevens. Thanks.

I built one a few years ago on an old M7 that a guy gave me because it had a bulged barrel. It’s the early model with steel bottom metal and the smooth bolt knob.

Keeping with the bargain theme since the action was free, I recontoured a heavy straight taper Douglas to match a Remington magnum contour. The barrel was one from a guy who made the age old mistake of building too heavy and was a 300wsm on a M70. Downside was that by the time I’d cut the shank and chamber off and reprofiled it I could only get 17.5” out of the finished blank. I chambered it in 300Savage since that’s my favorite 30.

For the stock I traded a buddy something for a Banser Sheep hunter that he’d procured in a trade and didn’t need and bedded the whole works in that.

Hung a VXI 2-7x33 A guy didn’t want back after I mounted a new Zeiss on his rifle on top in Talley LWs.

It shoots great and carries even better at under 7lb all up.

Factory mag-contour SAUM and WSM 22” guns balance well in the CDL, LS, and 673 stocks. 20” wouldn’t be too different.

I have Remington Sevens installed in McM Mountain Rifle style stocks, but they all have 22" barrels in order to improve the balance.

I don't care for the butt-heavy balance of the factory specs Sevens with 18.5" and 20" barrels, so, for me, they balance better with 22" Remington 700 Mountain Rifle barrels installed.

The only Seven factory specs riffles that balance very well are the 20" mannlichers and the 22" magnums.

Cash in your chips,forget ALL things "Seven" and if you lost a bet big enough,in which 308 is a MANDATE...simply go Montucky and never look back. Hint. Congratulations?!?

Wayyyyyyyyyy better yet,nab a 21" Fieldcraft in 264 Kreedmire while you can,mainly because it stomps THE fhuqk outta a 308,while recoiling less and you bank the 3" magbox,along with (5) 8x40 rail fasteners. Hint.

Cheer up...I suffer more than a few Sevens in MacaMillion stocks,from which to extrapolate. Hint. LAUGHING!

I run M7's with Mt Rifle (.223AI 21"), Douglas #1 (.223AI 22"), Douglas #2 (.308 22"), and Douglas #3 (.358 21") contours in Edge fill McMillans. All of those will fit in an Edge/Compact, Mountain Rifle, or M7 pattern McMillan stock. I'm not a big fan of the M7 pattern stock so I default to Edge, Mt Rifle, Classic in that order.

If you're picking a contour, think of contour with a M7 no differently than a 700...there's not that much difference in the actions. Barrel balance with stock weight is how to think.

With a light weight stock and a .308 hole, a sporter/#2 from 20-22" should balance slightly forward.

I’ve had builds on model sevens with barrel contours up to a #5.

Currently the two I’m using are a Bart 2b in a McM classic edge (6.5mm bore, weighs 6.5lbs naked with 24” barrel) and a Hawk Hill barrel profiled to Lila #2 in a McM Model Seven Edge (.22 bore, weighs 6lbs naked with a 22” barrel). I really like them both. Next build will be on a model seven action in a Manners Ultra Classic. I expect it will also be about 6lbs naked with a Bart 2b (6.5mm bore @ 20-22”)

Actually the Bartlein 2B is comparatively robust in this context. I've used Bartlein's 2, 2B, 3, & 3B, and Rock Creek's 2 & 3 in past builds. The only Model 7 was 6.5x47 hunting rifle and the Rock Creek #2 was relatively light-weight, well-balanced, and shot well. The first numbers below display the barrel blank diameters at the transition point or start-taper point or whatever you want to call it - in this instance it just so happens to be 6" from the breech-end of the blank. The second set of numbers are the barrel blank diameters at the max finished length, which is 24" for all but the last two contours. Hope this helps if you are still deciding which contour to use.

I have had a couple of Model 7's. One in 338 Fed and one in 260 Remington. Both had HS Precision stocks. One had a Hart barrel and the other had a Pacnor. Not sure which is which in the picture. I liked the Model 7 because the rifle is really handy and the opening in the action of a Model 7 is larger than the opening on a Remington 700 short action. It makes loading it easier. While I sold the two in the picture, I have realized the error of my ways and am currently having another 260 Remington built on a Model seven action now.

I’d see if Manners will inlet an Ultra Classic for your Seven build.

I have several Remington Model Seven SS rifles. I have a 7 SAUM with a 22” magnum contour barrel, 7-08 with a 20” barrel, and a 308 with a 20” barrel. All of them have the factory barrels on them. They’re very accurate and all of them balance perfectly.

I’ve never had a reason to swap a barrel on one.

Only 3 months to go if they follow the timeline mine was on!

Personally I’d try to do a factory 7 ks dupe on Barrel contour, cut at 18.5-20”. It’s a small rifle and I’d keep it that way. McMillan will build you a ks dupe stock....
