Wind you mean?

No, freezing rain, wet snow is kicking the heck outta 60yr old blued barrel & action.

Even got some pitting going on.

Will not use again (in our fall / winter conditions) until I can get stripped, repaired & reblued

Though under appreciated, the 25-06 is the better choice. It is the original non-belted magnum. Shoots flat, hits hard, is the perfect white tail cartridge, and has minimal recoil.

The 25-06 is an even better choice when you already have a .300 Win Mag.

Sell both and buy a 6.5 Creed.

Or just go kill stuff with a boring.308 and an inefficient .25-06.

However, 300 yards is a long poke in my area of operations.

Same here actually. Most of my most of the shots around where I hunt are 50-150yds. I did shoot a doe with this 25-06 at 400yds one time. 75% of the deer I have shot have been with a 55-65gr bullet from a .223. I shot a nice buck one year in the neck at 200yds and dropped him in his tracks. I'll probably end up selling this .308 because I dont shoot it anymore and the recoil is a little much for me...

If the recoil of the 308 is a bit much, sell it and the 300 Win Mag, and get a 7-08 or 6.5 PRC for your big gun.

I cant sell the .300 win mag, my father in law gave it to me. I do plan to sell the .308 soon.

The best thing about a 25-06 is it is the perfect action set up to build a 270 on.... wink

My dad bought this 25-06 for me about 18 years ago. I wish it was a .270!

I bought this .308 a couple years ago, I've shot a lot of .308. I cant do the recoil. The 25-06 with my loads are much more mild. I'm not a very big guy and my neck bothers me most of the time. I wish I had room to keep both but with all the reloading components and the rifle I'm overloaded. I've simplified my herd quite a bit lately.

When I got my first .308 I thought it was the ultimate all around cartridge, the more I shot it the more I figured out it wasnt for me, tried a muzzle brake and couldnt deal with the blast and noise. I'm thinking a 6mm will fit my disposition a lot better.

I used 100 TSX when I had my 25-06 and killed a number of deer with it but if I got another I would love to try the new Hornaday 110 gr ELD-X I would imagine around 3150 fps would be a sweet load.

I had a 25-06 and used it for deer for several years until I burned out the barrel and had it rebarrelled and chambered to 25-284 just for my curiosity. I was never real impressed with the performance of the 25-06 compared to other rifles I have for deer hunting so it was sitting in the safe a lot. Even with 100 and 120 grain partitions, it shot well but terminal effects were not impressive IMO....

Now that I'm thinning the herd a bit, the 25-284 is also for sale as I just have too many overlapping rifles these days and need to concentrate on a couple for a change...

Hard to believe a 308 would be too much recoil... I would have to believe it comes down to crappy stock design as 308 really isn't in the painful end of recoil with the proper stock design, recoil pad, and loads....

25-06 shoot flatter and kicks less. 308 hits harder and makes a larger and/or deeper hole. So because you started out saying it was for deer a deeper hole is not realistic as both will go clear through deer if you use bullets that don't break up. I would say the 25-06 will be easier to shoot and will be more forgiving to a degree than the 308 if you misjudge the range of a shot.

Neither will "out-kill" the other on deer.

Heck -----swap off now and then and use both. I own two 308s and a 25-06 also. I have killed a lot of deer and antelope with both. On deer there's not a huge difference in how they kill and so the only thing I can say is different is what I said at first, ---------- kick and trajectory.

Eh, it's all relative.

For me, shooting 22 rounds of 200gr 308 prone is no picnic. Guess I'm soft.

My .257 Roberts and .308's both get shot to 600 for targets. 110AB @ 3163fps for the .257. Took an antelope at 500 on a run (angling away and to the right) with that load. Never worked up a "long distance" load for my .308, a Ruger Scout with a 16.1" barrel. Daughter shoots hers to 600 using a 130TTSX @ 3045fps.

With a normal length barrel I'd go with the .308 for long range targets. With a new fast-twist barrel and some of the new .257" heavies, I'd go with the .25-06.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

I have both cartridges, I've had the 25-06 much longer. I have dropped deer at 250+ yds 120 gr, shot porcupines at 275+ 117gr and woodchucks with 90gr at all ranges under 300 with my 25-06. My 308 is new to me so i dont have as many results. If recoil is ever a issue than the 06 is your ticket. IMO both serve for harvesting game in our country.
Cheers

I have a bias and couldn’t give up a 308 Win it’s versatility is just too good. It, the 7mm-08 and the 6.5 Creedmoor are all so excellent in using modern bullet designs. There’s a great advantage firing bullets at various weights at muzzle velocity ranges of 2,550 fps - 2,950 fps as bullets typically perform as designers intended. Depending on bullet chosen there’s plenty of speed for expansion way out there, excellent expansion at 300 yards, and great bullet performance even at 100-200 yards. All three are terrific big game chambers. If the 308 Win is too much, I’d look at one of the other two, you’ll most likely make it your go to rifle for a long time. 25-06 Rem is a good chamber as well, but a quarter bore is more of a niche chamber to me and confined to presenting less versatility on big game.
