I live in Orange County NY, maybe 80 miles Northwest of NYC. It's a rural/small city/Bedroom Community County. Today I opened our local paper and there were 10 pages of obituaries and death notices for 39 people. This is a paper who normally might have two pages of obits for maybe 5-6 people. So, for all the people wondering how many more people will die this year in our country, this might give you a clue. The last time I saw anything close to this was a couple days after 9/11. And for our county, this is just the beginning.

Four obits per page? Either that paper is pamphlet-size or every obit is a full life story complete with anecdotes.
Plus I have to ask, how many were flu deaths?

Newspapers charge ungodly amounts of money to run an obit.

I guess they had to do something to take up the slack, with all the campaigns suspended...

Just get ready..... because the main stream media wants this virus spread into rural counties.

For rural America......social distancing is normal life.

It just isn’t fair this virus is hitting the largest liberal cities.....or Democrat-controlled States.

Those liberal States Governors want the Federal Government to take over so badly.......so they can blame Trump daily. Instead of making wise decisions for their State electorate.

The same States that wanted no part of the Federal govt after Trumps election.

Interesting. Could you break down their ages for us ?

In Oregon we have 999 confirmed cases and 27 deaths.

4.2 million or so.

So far.

What will the final number be?

And how is that number different if PA ignores, or doesn't ignore it?

Prayers for your community. Absolutely devastating for the communities that are taking the brunt of this to lose so many, so quickly. The rest of us have the chance to avoid that if people are smart enough to follow the guidelines. Sadly many won't and therefore this is just getting started, I fear.

It would be exactly the same. Second wave comes sooner or later.

You have obviously not been there.

Not to be cold about it, but statistics are funny things. This corvid thing is primarily a threat to the people with other health problems which describes the elderly. Are corvid deaths something new or merely killing people a little sooner? Say a person with COPD catches the bug and (predictably) dies. Perhaps that person would've died that year from COPD. So at year's end you have one more covid death but one less COPD death. You could do the same with heart disease.Could be by year's end the number of obits will balance out.

Again, not meaning to be cold but with statistics you have to be careful in stating the question you're trying to answer. Or you can get weird results which are essentially nonsense.

My local paper is notorious for being heavy with the obits of the elderly.
