Nice rifles are meant to be used, just not abused.

Nicest I have is a pair of Kimbers with better than decent wood. The .30-06 got the nod this year on a piggy in Texas and an antelope in Wyoming. Likely taking it on a mule back elk hunt in October.

I hunt with all of my firearms, including the ones with engraving and/or fancy wood. They were made to be used, and while the first scratch hurts the signs of good honest use, but not neglect, are the mark of a good gun.

Engraved, carved, antique double rifle worth the price of a nice pick-up.....gets used every opening day of deer season regardless of the weather and shot just for the sheer fun of it several times a year. Several others match that description and they ALL see woods time. I can't imagine not using any of my rifles, drillings or doubles. It's why I bought them. I also have some really good using rifles I have $300 or less in and they bring me just as much pleasure.

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of. Might as well leave em at home! Lol

Not dumb, I have also done this when I owned nice looking wood/blue rifles 👍......I take exceptional care of all my rifles (including my stainless/synthetic models) ....Too expensive (for Me) to abuse......Hb

That just makes 2 of ya then! Lol

They can all be refinished, if it's a synthetic and it gets scratched up another coat of paint gets it looking like new. If it's wood, raise the dents, sand it and apply the finish of your choice. I've even refinished stocks because I was bored. But then I don't care about "collector" value.

I guess that rifle use is much like my wife feels about a new truck. Take it out onto the two-tracks through sage brush.....and get it scratched a bit. Once done, just use it....don’t “baby it”! memtb

I hunt them all. The scratches and dings on the nice ones all have a memory attached to them. I have a deep scratch in the forearm of my shotgun from a barbed wire fence from an extremely memorable duck hunt 30 years or more ago. I was hunting with my best buddy and was upset at the time. He ended up passing from ALS way to young. Every time that shotgun is in my hands I look at that scratch and think of that hunt and all the other memories we made. Guns are built to be used!

I tend to get bored with a particular gun after a while, some have lasted longer than others but I have never in My life owned a particular gun over 5 or 6 years, I have zero sentimental value attached to any of my guns so When i see a scratch or a ding on a fine wood stock it dont give me any warm fuzzy memories from days of old all I see is my gun has been devalued for a future sell 😂😂......Hb

Cheesy, that gun is way beyond decent! That type of wood grain is my favorite; with dark streaks the length of the blank.

Custom 280ai I had built, and it's 2nd stock, after the 1st was stolen.
Beautiful piece of English walnut, and on its 2nd Oryx hunt, got a scratch on the cheek rest.
Now, I look at it, and remember the hunt like it was yesterday !
