I was just given a Winchester 1886 (manufactured in 1904) in 33 Winchester. Fortunately I also received two boxes of Remington ammo for that caliber. With my eyes I know that I won't be able to use the original sights and am starting to research tang sights. For those of you who have tang sights on an older 1886, are there any that you specifically prefer?

Thanks

I just bought a Lyman for my Winchester 94 in 38-555,mfgr'd in about 1907. Screwed right in with factory holes in the tang. It was about $90 from Brownells (($130 if you don't have an account with them I had an old Globe type front sight I put on it that matched.

Here is the same type tang sight and front sight from Amazon.

These are nice because have an aperture at at my eye and a selection of front sights. I put another aperture in the front then I have three concentric circles when using a 2" black bull at the target

I have a Riflesmith vernier tang sight on a repro 1886. They're no longer made but the MVA 132 or 133 is very similar. Mine is the mid-range staff and the eye piece is about 1/2" from the top of the staff zeroed 3" high at 100 yds so a short-range would likely be too short.

I have a Lyman 21 on my 1886. They are not easy to find, but really work while not interfering
with your eye like the tang versions. Try Garry Fellers in Ft. Worth,TX.

My other 1886 in 33 WCF has a tang sight-but it will be replaced with a LY 21 or a receiver sight.

Without doubt the Climbin Lyman" has no equal, second is a period correct lyman tang sight. Saying that, for a non-traditionalist a new lyman tang sight would be the best course.

Check out a reproduction Lyman 21.

I have an original (1910) Winchester 1886 that a guy wants. If I keep it, this is the way I am going.

I use that repro Lyman 21 on an 1895/405 and 71/348 - great sight. I would have used that on the 1886 also, but already had the Riflesmith tang sight on hand.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. As I researched the suggestions above, I'm probably leaning towards a tang sight as I don't want to drill and tap the action for a receiver sight.
