OK, lets see I find that for the most part, the biggest and baddest hoglets are taken by snare. another good one I typically set up at holes in fences. Some folks bait on either side. I don't due to the risk of catching a cow or deer. IMHO you want the pigs to be on the run when they hit the snare, not poking around for corn. I also set up on trails. This ol boy was running a trail beside the road near a wallow. I set it up with about a 14" diameter loop about 6" off the ground, suspended with tie wire from an overhanging branch. don't know if you can see it, but he'd worried the cable at the lock to where there was only a couple strands holding. I got there in the nick of time to put him down. I typically make up about a 10' leader out of 1/8" aircraft cable and wire rope clips. I make about a 4 to 6 inch loop on each end, that way I can thread one end through the loop on the other end and can then tether to something as skinny as a fence post or as big as a 24" diameter tree trunk. I don't use drags. Anywho, they flat work. ya! GWB

Gee, very interesting. As always - great narrative and photos. Why do you suppose, you catch the bigguns in snares?

Now your getting after em! I used the old fence hole trick as a kid snaring fox and coyotes. I've snared wolves and they can tear up snares but a buddy caught a grizzly in a wolf snare.
I suspect you're checking the line daily.
I like the hat......do they have one with ear flaps?

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

Gee, very interesting. As always - great narrative and photos. Why do you suppose, you catch the bigguns in snares? Actually I catch some of various sizes. Hogs are very smart critters. Big old boars are like big old deer, many times rarely seen. When there is any hunting pressure they go nocturnal. The snares are on duty 24 hours a day. The big boars are usually solitary and move at night rather than during the day. another big one snared at night. I shot this one 3 times with 00' Buck from a 12 gauge and Kyle put 4 rounds in him from a 44 mag carbine before he laid down and we approached. ya! GWB

I like the hat......do they have one with ear flaps? I hunt out of a camp. Usually get there in the afternoon. One of the first things I do is to go out and set snares. Then each morning I check them. Some mornings I'll sit in the stand until it starts getting hot, then go check them around 9:30. Take about 1.5 hours to run them and the traps....... and pens As to the ear flaps on the sun-brero', I guess they could be retro-fitted, but when the temps are in the upper 90's and low 110's, ya typically don't need to worry about keeping your ears any warmer. They do come with what the company calls a "stampede loop". https://www.sunbody.com/index.cfm/product/429/6-inch-brim-low-crown-gus-hat-guat-std-palm.cfmSnugged up under the chin it keeps the hat from blowing off your noggin when riding. ya!
