Looking to start load development for a newly acquired 7mm Weatherby Mark 5.

I have a pile of Barnes 150ttsx
Fed 215 primers
RL22 and IMR 4350

Anyone offer any load experience with these powders and bullets?

Thanks

Either powder will work well. I use both.

Any specific loads that are working for you guys Just getting some ideas together as to starting points.
What about distance off the lands? I’ve been told that I won’t reach the lands with a 150ttsx, and that anyway, Weatherby doesn’t like to be just off the lands.

I've had very good luck using R 25 in My 7mm Bee.

I load Barnes bullets exclusively in my 7mm Weatherby Magnum. It won't shoot cup and core bullets accurately, for some reason, but really likes Barnes TSX bullets. Twist is 1 in 9" in a replacement barrel on a 1950 Weatherby rifle with FN Mauser action.

My favorite powder is RL-19. RL-22 is only a hair slower, a grain or two. I had high hopes for RL-25, but it wasn't as accurate as RL-19. I like 68 grains of RL-19 under a 160 grain TSX. I have shot 140s, 150s, 160s, and 175s. 160s shoot best. Bullet jump to the rifling is long, but it doesn't seem to matter. I tried longer bullet seating, and the rifle shot worse.

My recommendation is RL-22 and the Barnes 150s.

I've had very good luck with Reloder 25 and Nosler 160 grain Accubonds. Shoots right at m.o.a. consistently at ~ 3,100 out of my 24" pencil whip Mark V.

Thanks all.
I load RL22 in my 7mm rem mag so I’m familiar with that. It seemed off when I read the Barnes website load data, and with RL22, it’s showing min’s and max’s both 10 grains more in the weatherby than the rem. Does the weatherby case have a higher capacity???? The cases look near identical to me besides the neck. 10 grains seems like a significant difference. This was data for RL22 w/150gr ttsx.

The Weatherby is loaded to a higher pressure and the freebore does take more powder to get there. I have a long throated 7RM and it loads about the same as the Weatherby. Also at times R22 had lot to lot variations up to 20% difference so I always check a couple sources and average them.

R-P brass holds way less powder than Weatherby brass. I have a 1-9 twist Lilja for 160-grainers. Tried 150-grain Ballistic Tips and Retumbo (--> 78 grains), which shot okay.
AA4350 and Ramshot MAGNUM shot like crap. The barrel/gun likes 162-grain ELD-X's with H 4831SC and 160-grain Federal TBT's with MAGNUM (close to factory load but 200 fps slower.)
Those are long like Barnes TTSX's and I'd try R22. Give them a long jump to the lands.

I also have a 7mmRM with a longer throat that takes heavier powder charges than a typical 7mmRM. My 2,980-3,000fps load for the 160NAB and RL22 is right on top of Nosler's book max for the Weatherby version.

The variations in the manuals when comparing the two 7mm chamberings can be interesting. I noticed that Nosler shows only a 3.5gr water capacity advantage for the Wby when both are loaded with 150gr bullets (Nosler brass in the 7mmRM and Wby brass in the 7mmWby.) This is a 4.5% increase over the 7mmRM. However, looking at the Barnes #4 manual and 150gr data with RL22 like the OP was talking about, they show 63.5gr max for the 7mmRM and 74.5gr max for the 7mmWby. That's huge. Both were shot in Kreiger 24" test barrels with the 7mmRM making 3,018fps and the 7mmWby making 3,245fps. That's also a sizable difference, but to be expected for an additional 17.3% larger powder charge.

Very flexible cartridge, a nephew up in MO. inherited a MK-V stainless/syn in 7mm WBY, he had never shot or hunted much at all, I had him order brass, dies and an Uncle Bucks bulls bag, brought with me some Fed-215's, IMR-4350, 120gr ballistic tips and my chrono, loaded up a very mild load with the 120gr BT's to 3200 fps, near zero recoil.

Set him +3 inches at 100 yards, he's been shooting deer to 300 yards for 5 years now, he just kills for the table, he, his Wife and three daughters now love venison, he's sent me several pics over the years, shoots em in the ribs, no wasted meat and always gets an exit.

If you’ll give me your e-mail I will send my load data spreadsheet for my 7 Wby Mk V.

My load data, 24” barrel:
120 Triple Shock @ 3650
140 Accubond at 3200
140 Triple Shock @ 3400
150 Scirocco @ 3200
160 Northfork @ 3200
160 Accubond @ 3200

Throttle fixes everything. If it doesn't fix the problem, it’ll end the suspense.

I don`t know what cases you are using for you`re 7 Rem Mag, assume RP, also assume Wby cases for the 7 Wby. Weigh the two different cases. You may be surprised.
I`ve a Wby with 687 rnds down the Pac-Nor barrel, by count. Throat is shot. I may just replace with a long throat 7 RM. Simpler all the way round.

Sorry for the deviation of topic.

If R-22 turns out to be your huckleberry, we might could do business. I've got several pounds of it and then I come to find out my 7-STW hates it..................

That is a really low round count, did you use it for prairie dogs? I think I am averaging 2-2,500+ rounds for the 7 RM. I think the Weatherby and Mashburn are a better case design due to longer necks. If I did a Weatherby I would do a long throat but no free bore or the very minimum that would allow factory rounds to be shot.

I did in fact, a few years ago in Wy. hunting goats...A slow day, worked really well!
From new, my barrel measures a 77thous. increase, so that plus the freebore gives most bullets I use a long jump, and I`m starting to push the limits of the 700 mag. well.
My new barrel will not have freebore, I`ll make up a dummy round, send it to them, and go from there.
Or, maybe not...I`ll see what bites me at the time.

I loaded IMR 7828 with 160gr Accubonds for a buddy in a Weatherby Accumark. Got 3300fps with no problems. Seems to me, RL22 would be much better compared to the 4350 for obtaining the most velocity in this case, although RL22 is very sensitive to temperatures, so I don't shoot it anymore.
