I have an old 700 KS (the bright blued version) in 7mm Rem Mag which has an extractor that is cracked about halfway through near the rivet. I spoke with a local smith last week who basically said he didn't want to fool with replacing the factory extractor and recommended installing the Sako style extractor. I've never had this done, and have read quite a few conversations regarding the pros/cons of the conversion. Personally, I'd rather replace with the design the manufacturer intended and reevaluate later if it gives me any further troubles.

I've seen the extractor kits at Brownell's and Midway, and don't mind to do it myself if feasible. Other than drilling out the current rivet and setting the new one, are there any adjustments to be made to the factory style extractor? Any words of advice either way, or words of caution?

Drill it out!

Modify a center punch, about the size of the replacement rivet in kit from brownells. Do not drill. The rivet is soft. Years ago i did warranty for RAC and was factiry trained. Im retired now. You will need an anvil to support the rivet head. Check you tube for helpful videos. Good luck with it. Mel

That's what I'm said punch it out, why try to drill it out, alot of extra work. Rivet is soft, you have to peen it over cold when installing a new one so its not hardened. I have a special punch I made just for this, I also was a Remington repair shop, and a S&W repair shop back in the 90's. Did alot of extractor replacements

Hes trying to make money. by talking him into a unnecessary repair, only time I would recommend going to Sako extractor is going up or down on case diameter or on the 721, 722 or 725 rifles where extractors arent available any more

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. I think it was Midway that sells the factory original extractors, but the rivets are sold separately. They have two sizes of rivets, would I need the long version or the short one?

You want the 700 mag rivet since your gun is a 7 mag, so short

A couple of years ago Tom Jackson in Davenport Iowa replaced a Remington extractor for me. It works great. Have it done right.

Built a jig years ago, holds everything in place, extractor, rivet and bolt. Leaves both hands free
