Hi All,

I've just uploaded another You Tube Video. It's a quick clip from one of many Guided Hunts I use to run in Northern Australia.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

Hi Mike,

Yes we eat them. They are always tough as hell. I normally just mince it as the flavor is great.

Looked like a well placed shot. What caliber are the rifles?

Hi ST50

There was actually 2 shots. You can hear the second shot in the slow motion replay. His mate, behind and to the left made the second shot.

One shot in the head, the other in the shoulder.

Both using .375 H&H

At first I did not hear the second shot. Was guessing he caught him in the neck. Makes sense the other guy pulled off a head shot. Cool video.

Thanks JohnGlenn

I always carried a Rifle myself when I Guided Hunters as back up incase something went wrong. On this occasion both hunters had already shot there trophy Bull. When they decided to try get this one I had confidence in his mate being the back-up Rifle. So I took the Camera. I was questioning that decision when I saw that Bull put his head down and head straight for that couple. Lucky they both could shoot. They went home with a great story to tell.

OzzyHunter,

What are the other common or preferred water buffalo cartridges in that area?

Those guys are obviously seasoned hunters. Standing firm in the face of a charge until a good shot presents itself takes a pair of balls! Those guys must need a wheelbarrow to carry theirs around! What do you prefer as a "stopping" rifle as a guide?

.375 H&H Is the most common and most Outfitters with set that as the minimum. I've seen a few guys using .416 Rigby. Anything heavy and hard hitting will do the trick. Water Buffalo are harder to put down than a Cape Buffalo. I found hard projectiles are a must. My preference is BarnsX full copper projectiles.

Hi Jerry

Yes they were seasoned hunters. They had impressed with the Bulls they had shot previously. These guys were the fist ones I was happy to let back each other up. Lucky they stood there ground in this instance.

I had a double rifle in .470 Nitrate that I used sometimes as a backup rifle. I didn't actually like it that much and actually just started using another .375 as a back up gun. It's all about shot placement. .375 H&H has all the hitting power I need. It's up to the shooter from there.....

I've seen many Big game Cartridges used with similar results. I found with Water Buffalo. The main thing is hard, heavy projectiles to get full penetration was more important than the Calibre. As mentioned above I found Barnes X projectiles by far the best.
