Does anyone know why savage didn't just add the lug on the 410 barrel like the rifle barrel so the fore end can just be snapped on? I know I saw where someone did add the takedown lug a while ago. Have any of you ever tried it? Thanks in advance, Ed
I had my local gunsmith D&D in Michigan do exactly what you suggested. The barrel was a little rusty so I had him add the lug and reblue. He said it did take some trial and error to get the lug in the right place so that the forearm with latch probably. Also it will not fit on any of my other Savage 99 takedowns. I would believe that lug position is unique to each rifle to get proper enjagement. If you can tell me how to upload a photo I would be happy to post a few photos.
Thanks 300. Unfortunately I still haven't figured out the picture posting here! That makes sense about lug location...... I am also curious to know if the 410 barrel will work with most calibers. Thanks again, Ed
Yes, the 410 barrel will work with any takedown 99, any chambering. No factory fitting needed.
The only thing Savage wanted to know when you bought it was what model you had, so they could give you a 410 barrel with a profile that fit your forearm.

The catalogs state - "Rifle should be sent to factory for necessary fitting or adjustment to the receiver". Having fitted one myself I found it didn't just don't screw in, it was quite a job getting the barrel to fit my gun. It did not index correctly and I had to do some relief work in the receiver to deepen the extractor slot so the action could close on a 410 shell - The rim diameter of a .410 is larger than any of the other chamberings. I know another member had issues with the extractor when he tried to fit a barrel, I believe he took some metal off the extractor.
Attached are pictures of my only take down, 22 HP, by my measurements with the thin contour barrel the little indent for the lug attaching screw would only leave about 0.020" material with a .410 bore, with just the dovetail there would be 0.056", I don't know if that would be considered enough to be safe or not.
All that to end up with a measly .410 gun that's woefully unbalanced/configured for effective shotgunning. Undeniably cool and neat though, I'll admit.

Heresy! Or is it blasphemy?
I can never keep those two straight.

I put some guns into a category I call Vermin Rifles. They were made for dispatching vermin from around the campfire or the garden. That's how I see the function of the 99 410 barrel. Its a vermin dispatcher for the times when a center fire would be bringing too much to the party.
