Very Nice truck. Its refreshing to see, rather than these nauseating, unorignal Tacomas and 4runners with mini van engines, decked out with worthless and equally nauseating "overland" junk.

I would take that truck to church Every Sunday! That is completely bad ass. And I also like the comment on dropping a Cummins in there.

Here's me dirty '78 CJ5 that I've owned since 1987. Replaced it's under-powered original AMC 304 V8 with a 401 V8 in 1991. Prior to that, I scattered it's semi-weak T-150 3 speed trans, then replaced it with an old Ford truck T-98 (precursor to T-18) 4 speed granny low transmission. After that, I knew the weak-azzed model 20 rear axle wouldn't last, and had a Ford Dana 60 rear-end narrowed to 52" built for the rear end, running a Powr-Lok diff. It's lifted about 3.5" and runs 33x13.50 Super Swamper TSX tires on "back-in-the-day" 15"x10" Enkei rims.

Ford guys will come out of the woodwork when you break down though. Three days ago, my f-350 lost the alternator and batteries were dead in Fairbanks, one hour from home. Bolted in new alternator, then a ford guy pulls right up to give me a jump as batteries were dead.


Later on, tranmission went out towing my m10028 cucv on a trailer. I was on a steep hill/blind corner/narrow road and was stressed out. Guy in an f-350 come out of nowhere, hooks up a tow strap and gets the road clear, towing me to a safe place.

That "F.ound O.n R.oad D.ead moniker, man those ford guys feel your pain.

You ever experience a chevy 292 inline six? Mine was pulled out of a 65 burb of the same body style as your truck. If you haven't already, check out www.12bolt.com

The company helps guys build a mean inline six. Towing firewood and running a canoe laden 4wd to the waters edge, I like an inline six. I'm not brand loyal either, though the 292 is my favorite.

I have owned and run a ford 300 inline six.
In landcruisers: 12-ht (4.0 inline six turbo diesel) 2f inline 6, 3fe inline six, 1hdt turbo diesel inline six, 4.5L 1fz-fe.
In dodge: 6bt cummins. Chrysler slant six.

I've got one of those out of a similar 1967 medium duty. It was freshly rebuilt, so I held on to it when I scrapped the rest of the truck. It's been sitting up on the pallet racking for 5 or 6 years.

292's(1963-1990) are torque monsters. Come to a grade where you "might" have to downshift & the big six just keeps pulling. If you like any type of inlne exhaust notes, these sound great. They do like gas.

The ignition on the one pictured, possibly the oil filter type & rocker cover hold downs indicate that the pictured one is quite a bit newer than a 66. Bit does't matter, its just likely better in some ways.

Yes a torque monster for sure. The stroke on a 292 is longer than a 383 chevy "stroker", by a large margin.

I put a local blm gal on two bull caribou on the river this year. She used her old f350 with carburetored 300 ford inline six. I put the truck in four low and backed it into the river until the bumper was flush with the water and tied the boat up against the bumper. Pulled the gutted caribou into her truck.

The river current was strong, so brought the revs up to 2000 rpms before I let off the clutch peddle. The engine slammed the whole drivetrain so hard, the back of my head slammed off the rear window. Lost my grip off the steering wheel. I honestly thought i sheared an axle shaft or u- joint.

With the big displacement in line sixes, you need not bring up rpms like a v8, as all the torque is there at idle. With my 327 chevy hauling a load, I have to bring rpms up to 2200 rpms before if drop the clutch peddle, or it will stall.

The 292 chevy and 300 Ford's were put in big box/delivery trucks and dump trucks as well.

Yes, this truck has a 292 in it.

Had a 65 Chev PU with a 292 loved it my bud borrowed it and it sounded like it had a rod knocking, found a rebuilt 283 V8 cheap and put it in did not like the loss of torque
for putting around better highway rig but missed the tractor like power of the 292. Had several Ford,s with the 300 6 did not like it as well as the 292.

I here yah. I'm currently pulling the 327 chevy out, for the 292. Nothing wrong with it, but not really a tractor motor, more of a high rpm/quick throttle response kinda motor.

Yea went cruising when I put the 283 in and kept spinning wheels in loose gravel the 292 had a very smooth torque curve and more useful traction. Thinking back the 292
knock probably was the harmonic balancer. But the 283 was better for highway use.

I had a friend in high school in the 90's that had nearly the identical truck but blue. His step dad had an old 327 that he had no idea where it came from we put in it. I'm not joking i have no idea how high that 327 revved but i swore the rods should have came out of it 1000 times and it never let go. Ran like a scalded dog.

K20, yep that 327 likes to rev. With an over-load of green birch, the motor wants 3000 rpms between shifts. Steep inclines, 4-5000 rpms between shifts. Couple times I hit 6000-7000 rpms without issue. Gets there in a nano second.

T-zone, yah the 67-72 are some dmn good lookin rigs. Very little emissions madness. Engines of the era put out good power. Just pulled another 292 from an 80s chevy 3/4 ton.
It's going in my 1972 k5 blazer. It's mustard yellow.

The k20 is getting 4:56 geared m1008 cucv axles. 14 bolt rear with Detroit locker, Dana 60 front with a limited slip. That's how the military axles came. Direct bolt swap, that's the joy of 67-72. Parts commonality over a broad spectrum of years and models.

No bling, no plush, just straight tough, no chaser, and the eye knows it goes down to the bone.
