I have a friend that wants to sell a Marlin 39A Take Down carbine. This one comes with the canvas bag. I guess it is a survival model. The gun looks literally brand new. It was shot/handled vary little. Does anyone know the fair market value of this gun?

All depends what year it was made and condition never heard of a survival model they are all take downs does it have a curved lever or straight lever?
If it's a straight lever it's a Mountie they are bringing crazy prices
If it's an older Mountie in the condition you say it's in easy over $700.00
Or it could be a 39 TDS they were a shorter rifle 16.5 inch barrel I believe they came with a case from the factory....750.00 to 900.00 $1000.00 if somebody can't live with out it.

Wilkeshunter: These are rare little Rifles - if it is the same Rifle that I have - a Marlin 39 TDS.
Mine I bought new and it remains unfired in its canvas (black if I recall correctly) carrying case.
Mine has the 16 1/2 barrel and is as cute as a bugs ear!
These were advertised (manufactured 1988 - 1995), again if I recall correctly, as Take Down Survival (TDS) Model 39's.
My two year old "blue Book" shows 100% condition at $750.00 (I would NOT even consider selling mine for that pittance!). So add some for more current and more realistic prices and rarity - and I would propose it to be in the area of $900.00 to $1,000.00. I looked over on gunsstealersinternational and one is listed there at $1,199.00 plus shipping.
The reason I can not be more definitive in my estimation is because I have never seen another one for sale at a gunshop or a gunshow since I bought mine out in Bellingham, taxington way back when!
I want one to throw behind the seat of the VarmintMobile and have along at all times but not be gettin in the way. Just can NOT find a "used" one.
Again I have never fired a round out of mine so can't comment on function/accuracy/handiness afield etc.
I say GO AFTER this piece with intensity and gusto - or, "I" will.

P.S.: Let me add my Rifles serial number so's we can be sure we are talking oranges to oranges here - #102511xx - compare that to your friends.
According to one Marlin dates of manufacture list I found my Rifle was made in 1990.

Hey Gang,

Thanks for all the great responses! These Marlins sure are neat little rifles! It is in their hands now. I told them to let me know what they had to have for it. There are some in their family that are interested in the rifle, supposedly to quickly resell for a profit. These folks know me well, and they know that we will keep it, care for it, and hunt with it. It would be a squirrel rifle for my son, daughter, and myself. My son may actually shoot it in 4-H competition, as he is a bit on the shorter side. I will let you boys know how things work out.

I have some good news! We ended up settling on $450.00 for the 39A. The seller was really wanted assurance that whom ever purchased the rifle would keep it and use it. They really were concerned that it would would be resold to pick up a quick buck. Luckily for me, I had some folks speak on my behalf, that I would do with the rifle as I promised. I sent many thanks to the seller. She is away at a vacation property, so I won’t get it for a week or two. Come October, we will be hunting squirrels with our Model 39A!

That was a fantastic buy, congratulation! I don't have the case for my TDS but it's in great condition and is very fun to shoot. Enjoy your new rifle.

People are just so happy with them they seldom come onto the market.

Thats an amazing buy! I just paid 2x that for one. Straight handle TDS, made in 1988. It is a fun gun, still working on decreasing the trigger pull with a new wolff spring.

I thought they were all TD models? All of them I ever had would take down by unscrewing one bolthead made for that purpose! It is a large knurled bolt head on the lower right side of the action above the lever. Open the action fully, unscrew the TD bolt and rotate the action a bit as you pull it apart. You did well grasshopper. Be Well, Rustyzipper.

Yes you are correct in that they all are a take down model, but the TDS model has a shorter barrel and a canvas case that is pocketed for the two pieces.

Well that is cool. My '48 or '49 39A was taken down several times today. I found a minor problem and decided to clean the built up wax lube and oil from the corners of the action. Now I will have to detail some other areas. You will like the 39A Wilkeshunter. Lots of fun. Is the capacity something like 17 LRs and 21 shorts? I seem to remember those numbers. And remember to ignore the old saw about not having to clean a rimfire. Just don't overdo the rifling and be careful of the muzzle. I wonder how many rounds you can get out of a 39A?
