For this redwood picnic table the boys and I built for Mothers Day present? Danish oil is what I am leaning towards. Any thoughts?

Danish oil isn't at all waterproof and will offer no UV protection if that matters to you. I wouldn't use it if the table will be left outdoors and you don't want the wood to quickly get weathered.

Cabots makes some good products or spar varnish...also Watco makes a good exterior/marine grade finish as well. Nice job!

Realize spar varnish is quite waterproof. Put it on and you commit to a lot of regular work keeping it good looking. Like brightwork on a boat, beauty comes at a large price. Lots of good ordinary deck stains out there that will not look as good to start but will require less maintenance. In the long run they look better longer.

Meant to say they MAY look better longer...

Good choice, being a urethane it does not yellow and is harder and clearer than polyurethane. Only negative is the redwood is pretty soft and while urethane will stand up to more abuse than the others, when it fails it is much harder to repair. It is usually used on much denser woods, especially teak.

Minwax makes a polyurethane varnish if you want varnish. Otherwise it would be a semi transparent deck stain.

I’d use some sort of oil that can be easily maintained\seasonally applied. Spar varnish is a PIA to keep up with. On any application where spar varnish would be the typical choice, I use Bristol Finish. It’s a much better material and is much easier to maintain. http://bristolfinish.us/The link is safe, I promise.

Nothing stands up to the sun unless you strip and refinish every few years. Redwood weathers to a nice gray finish. I would leave it natural.
