How many big game animals do you think you've killed since you started hunting? , how many years have you been hunting? and what was your longest successful shot?

For me I'd say I'm around 45 animals ( 1/2 Mn. whitetails, 1/2 out west. ) , been hunting for 40 years and my longest was a finishing shot on a elk at 415.

This is just for fun....

Hi Randy? I really have no idea between Heartland and prairie white tails, western elk, mule deer, and bear; AK, and Africa.

But I remember well my longest shot because it was the best one I made also..a Nebraska, November, rutting whitetail buck the morning after a blizzard. Against a white backdrop, he had just stopped broadside, facing another lesser animal — 507 yards by LRF. 284 with a 150-gr TTSX. I laid over a backpack.

I killed my first deer when I was 18, I’m 40 now. I’ve killed 50 or so whitetails and 20-25 turkeys. My longest shot was on a coyote right around 350yds.

Killed my first big game animal when I was 8 years old - a black bear at the town dump. Bears were considered vermin back then with no closed season nor restrictions other than no poisons. Killed him and a second bear with a 22 LR.

Not sure how many deer I've shot over the 40+ years but it has been a few. Some years I could take multiple deer in the states I hunted and it was not uncommon to shoot 10-12 deer some years. It wasn't unusual to not even see a track other years so the numbers are lower than one might think.

I've shot deer under population control permits and that runs into the hundreds over the years. "Best" night was just under 30 deer out of one park.

Antelope were 9. Was able to shoot 2/year for 4 years, the last year we shot only one each due to a drop in population. Group I hunted with kind of broke up afterward.

I've shot 7 elk in 10 years. 4 of the elk I worked for, the other 3 I got lucky as they wanted to commit suicide.

Black bears are 23. The first half dozen were the typical 150-180# live weight but the others have gotten a little bigger. Smallest dressed 212# with the largest 273#. Sad to think I've shot whitetails bigger than most of my bears.

I've shot 8 other black bears as nuisances including my first two. They were all under 200#.

Snared 5 wolves from one pack. They were good citizens until there was a change in leadership and they took a cow and a couple sheep from neighbor's.

Longest shot on any unwounded animal was between 250 and 300 yards. That was a whitetail along a power line right of way. First couple of antelope I thought were way out there but realized how small they were and got used to wide open country. Never became good at estimating range but learned to cut my guess by half and hold a little lower than I wanted to.

I started hunting my second year of college in 1965 with my first mule deer. I've shot at least one mule or whitetail deer most years since then.

I shot my first elk in 1966. Elk are the only animal that I kept track of in a book. The last elk that I shot was number 35.

I shot my first pronghorn antelope in 1971. Since moving to Montana in 1975 I've shot an antelope most years since then.

If you count coyotes, a bobcat, and a wolverine I've shot 20 species of North American game animals that also include 3 black bears, 2 Shiras moose, a mountain goat, 3 bighorn rams, a Dall ram, an American buffalo, a mountain lion, a musk ox, 4 species of caribou, and a Sitka blacktail deer. Other than my Canadian animals, my buffalo and mountain lion, all of my other North American animals were on DIY hunts, and most of them were also solo hunts.

I shot 3 exotic Texas animals including a Scimitar horned oryx, a blackbuck, and an aoudad.

In New Zealand I shot a Red deer stag, a fallow deer, a Himalayan Tahr, a chamois, an Arapawa ram, and a bunch of wallabies.

I've hunted 3 countries in Africa on 6 trips, and have taken, I think, 37 species of animals including a cape buffalo and a leopard. For the most part I only shot one animal of each species, however I have shot 2 or 3 animals of some species. I think my longest shot on any animal was in South Africa where I shot a gemsbok at 348 yards with my .375 RUM.

I think the last animal on my list would be the Dagestan Tur that I shot in Azerbaijan 3 years ago.

I should be my taxidermist's favorite customer as he has mounted at least one of each of these species of my animals (although I'm still waiting on 11 animals).

Started hunting in 1979 when I turned twelve.

Numbers? Have no idea but it has to be in the hundreds.
There was a stretch in the early 2000's when deer numbers were extremely high and I was putting 10-12 deer a year in the freezer.
Antelope probably no more than a dozen.
Turkeys have to be in the dozens. Three this spring alone.
Elk, only 7. Been in on dozens of hunts.
1 Bighorn sheep
1 Axis
1 Blackbuck
1 Black Hawaiian ram
1 javelina
6 hogs
3 black bears
1 Shiras moose
dozen African animals

Longest shot was 1991, 450 yards? 270 Winchester- whitetail buck.

Been big game hunting since 1962 (I was 9). Longest shot 384yds on a blacktail. A few mule deer, a few elk, a few pigs, close to 100 deer on hunts and more than that shooting depredation. 2 safaris with 10 or so animals each. A red stag and blackbuck on hunts in Argentina.

I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all.

1 Canadian moose, 2 Antelope, 2 barren-ground caribou, 2 black bears, 5 Mule Deer, 12 elk, 50-60 whitetail deer (maybe more, there were several years when I had 7-8 deer tags). I received my 1st deer tag in ND in 1988. Longest shot was a doe @ 732yds w/243Ai/105 A-Max. Longest shot on a buck was a Mule Deer last fall in WY @ 560yds.

[quote=handwerk]How many big game animals do you think you've killed since you started hunting? , how many years have you been hunting? and what was your longest successful shot?

Been hunting 39 years for big game.

Animals killed; Deer: Around 60. Mostly whitetail, and maybe a dozen muledeer.
Elk: 23 mostly bulls, but a few cows.
Black bear: 9.
Mtn Lion: 2.
Antelope: 2
Caribou: 2

Longest shot was 531 yards on an elk. The least "exciting" elk kill also.

Most of my stuff came the first 25-30 years though. I haven't killed an elk in 6 years and a bear in at least that long. Just don't have much desire to shoot a bear anymore. I'd just as soon shoot a cow elk for meat as a raghorn bull elk anymore.

My favorite stuff to hunt any more is deer and coyotes. The one animal that I would love to have more opportunity to hunt is antelope.

114 whitetails including 37 with a bow and 21 with a muzzleloader plus 3 with a pistol.
9 antelope
5 mule deer
5 elk
3 black bears
2 javelina
50+ turkeys

My longest shot was 589 yards on an elk.
Took a big Utah bull elk at 450 yards in 2016.
My Montana whitetail last year was 425 yards.
Most of my whitetails have been taken at 100 yards or less.

I’ve never kept track. 38 now, and all I can say is I’ve killed a ton of game over the years.

Elk
Mule Deer
Antelope
Whitetail
Moose
Fox
Bobcat
Aoudad
1,000s of prairie dogs

What’s to come
Bear - I’ve had plenty of chances
Caribou
Maybe red stag

This year I shot my 95th deer. I have shot 3 blacktails and the rest are about an even mix of mulies and whitetails. I have shot 25 elk, 16 pronghorns, 2 black bear, 2 bighorn sheep, a mountain goat, 4 bison, some exotics in TX and I don't know how many hogs. I have also been to Africa 5 times where I took 46 species. So I'm probably between 250 and 300 head of big game all told.

I shot my first deer when I was 9 and I'm 57 right now. Farthest shot was probably between 450 and 500 yards on a 5x5 bull elk in CO. I was on one side of a big clearing and he was on the other headed for cover on a dead run. I had time for one shot and I held about 2 body lengths in front of him and a body depth above him and touched off with my 7mm Mag. Broke his spine at the last rib. My rifle was sighted in 6 inches high at 200 yards so I got about a 3 ft drop which is how I figured the range was 450+. That was the only bull my party saw that year since it was a hot dry year and the elk basically went nocturnal. I got that bull at first light and if he made 50 more yards he would have been in a really nasty canyon.

Been hunting since was 8, got one mule deer and an elk in Idaho where I grew up. Moved to Alaska in when I was 14 and have since taken 30+ moose, 15 -20 Caribou. Not a bear hunter but have shot half dozen black bears and 2 Griz. Wolves ,coyotes and a couple linx. I'll be 64 next month and still take moose season off every year.

Longest shot was 600 yards on the dot. Raghorn bull elk.
