I am looking at some pics of an older Marlin. Owner thinks its a 39, but it has the mag latch of the 1897 era guns. Also has a pistol grip stock, tang sight which covers the model number. What are some of the physical differences between the two that I can spot in some pics?

Ok, its a model 39. Has the serial number under the lever # 34xx. The take down screw has a slot in it. The mag tube latch is the same style as the 1897 and got me thinking. again.
