I'm looking for a quality barrel blank to help out a neighbor kid. He just turned 18 in December, and bought himself his first rifle,a Custom FN 98 in .308 Norma. Problem is, the PO had a brake installed that used a set screw in addition to threading on. The setscrew counterbore was drilled too deep and when they cinched the setscrew down, it caused a restriction in the bore. I can of course cut the threads off but the barrel would be just over 21". He's still in High School and pretty disappointed in his purchase and not flush with money. The rifle is real nice otherwise so I'd like to rebarrel it for him on my dime. However, since I've closed up shop, I don't have any suitable blanks on hand. I'm hoping someone has a barrel that they've sat on and want to get rid of. Open to any caliber from 6.5mm up to .338. Would prefer a barrel that would finish out at between 24" to 26".

Anyway, thanks for reading. If you have anything suitable, let me know what you have and what you need for it.

Thanks!

I have a 21" 30-338 that shoots 180's at 3065. A little loud but shoots good. Might just cut it at 21 and see what he thinks?

That was my thought. Recoil may be a bit more stout without the brake, but the gun should still be usable.

We discussed this. A cut and crown is easy enough but two things he didn't like about the short barrel: First was the muzzle blast. He liked the brake even less but did like the way it tamed the recoil some. Second objection was the recoil. The rifle only weighs 6.75 lbs which is quite light for a wood stocked Mauser. It was originally a .30-06 with a pencil thin barrel.

Still, he would use it if push came to shove. I just feel bad for the kid. Not too many young folk around that have an interest in hunting and shooting and are even halfway respectful anymore. He is, so I'm just trying to help him out.

I appreciate the feedback on how your 21" performs. I was concerned that it would drop the velocity down a good bit more than that.

Thanks!

His first rifle, and it's a 308 Norma, eh?

I've got a .308 that I think is off a factory 40X that you could have for the cost of shipping. Cutting the chamber off should get into good rifling and still end up long enough. Might want to thin it down a bit. Also have a Krieger 13" twist .308 palma barrel that has very low miles on it and should handle up to 185's just fine. I'm putting one on my 300 win mag. Again, would need to be profiled. Factory take off Rem 700 7mag with low mileage. If any of these interest you, shoot me a pm. The second two aren't free but well below market value.

I want to thank everyone who responded. I got some very generous offers. In the end, I decided to order a new barrel direct so we could get the contour and twist rate we wanted.

I think cowboy bart has a few mauser barrels, you might send him a PM.

Yeah, I thought so too. Kid is in High School, no way am I posting a pic of him with a rifle so that some misguided [bleep] can misuse the pic on social media. Anyway, as I said, I ordered up a barrel so we in business. And again, I do appreciate the offers that were sent my way.

I have a 270 barrel that’s threaded for a Model 70. It supposedly chambered for 270 WBY. I Bought as is and don’t know much about it. It would be cheap if wanted.
