Has anyone ever seen an ambidextrous safety on a 99? I have a 99 that was my grandfathers and just noticed it a while back. I’ll have to double check the serial number but I’m pretty sure it was made in 1950, it’s an EG in 300 savage. I’m guessing it’s something that was done by a gunsmith as I’ve never seen another one. I will get pictures of it if anyone is interested.

there was a thread on one of the sites awhile ago with the procedure of installing one. seems the part was at one time available from Numrich gun parts. it didn't look that hard to install, machining of the action was required though, so not a drop in unit.

Pictures would be great . Savage did offer a left hand safety.

Somebody, I don't know who, offered a tang safety conversion that mounted into the stock and fit up against the back of the upper tang. I suspect that it was sold in the years before Savage switched over to the tang safety on most of its 99s.

There were a couple different companies that made aftermarket tang safetys, i think the one i have was made by Pachmayer. If i remember correctly Drew had one of the other brand. Heres the one i have. Don

I really, really regret selling a 99R I had with one of those tang safeties. Beautiful rifle but I was not an R fan. What I was, was, stupid, for letting it go.

Your old R is in very good hands and has been hunted quite a bit since you sold it to me. I gifted it to my father. He is left handed and it is a perfect rifle for a lefty with the tang safety. He mounted a steel tube weaver K4 and it is crazy accurate with 150 grain Remington factory ammo.

Heres the one i have. Don Yeah, Don, I think yours is the same as the other one posted and the most common by far which was made a company called Sporting Arms or some such... can maybe read it on the box that was posted. I own or have owned quite a few of these. I do have one other that is different, the tang safety is actually on a full oval on the tang with wood all the way around it... does not work as well as the more common one. Your brothers is still the only one I have ever seen like that.

Does anyone have a lead on where an ambi safety can be found for a pistol grip 99e? Thanks in advance!

Don't know that there are any. The post-1960 tang safeties are good, but the post-1960 99E is a lever safety. I'm not sure the pre-1960 aftermarket tang safeties that show up would work on a post-1960 99E.

Hmmm, I would prefer a lever safety conversion of some sort. I wish I was handy enough to make one

Numrich had them for a while but they sold out quick once it was divulged. Maybe someone bought more than they need?
I would think it could be made to work with the 99E lever safety.
I am no longer accepting orders for the Lightfoot scope mount.

I've seen at least two post 1960 99E's with premil serial numbers that had been removed so my guess is they used leftover pre mil receivers for at least some of the post 1960 99E's.
