I just replaced all 3 of the porcelain lightening arrestors on my fence and I suppose they worked because the charger is still working fine despite one the arrestors being blown to pieces and the other two arcing/shorting to ground.
I am also going to add a lightening fuse between in line between the charger and the hot wires. I ordered the fuses and a different type of lightening arrestor from Electricfencelight.com
You can contact the owner of the company at the number listed on the website (I think his name is John) and get more information. He seems quite knowledgeable about electric fence lightening protection.

Thank you. How many ground rods did you have on each porcelain arrestor?

I have each porcelain arrestor connected to a 4' ground rod.
It's important to keep the ground rods in moist ground and that is challenging in Tx. sometimes.
