While national top health advisors say that there was never any reason to close state borders, state governments chose to do so anyway. Now NSW want to open their borders but most other states are refusing. Here in QLD our chief medical officer wants to see 1 month of zero community transmission before considering opening borders. COVID's not going away so I guess we'll never be opening the borders again.
It's now a competition between the states - whoever keeps the borders closed longest seems to be the smartest. They are slinging their bile at NSW for wanting to open their borders yet having the highest number of infections - how childish is that?
What is wrong with these people?
I've never been a follower of Pauline Hansen but good on her for taking steps to get a constitutional lawyer involved to challenge the government.

Well, looks like travel is being opened up between New Zealand, New South Wales and Victoria. But our beloved QLD state premier, and her beloved chief medical officer, are digging in and going to keep our borders closed. Guess we can't let those filthy southerners in because they harbour that nasty COVID and we'll all die if they get in. Funny how we can travel 150km from home now but only as far as the border - crossing that is surely certain death, but we're all in this together. Oh well, as long as the premier and chief medical officer still have their jobs, I'm happy - would hate to think they become unemployed like those in the tourism industry that their dictations are wiping out. The next state governments can try and sort out the economic mess.

It seems that our rulers hate to relinquish their sense of control. Control freaks drunk on power. Big Brother knows what's best for us....

why doesn't redneck one nation queen Pauline take her to task? Chief Health Minister Dr Jeanette Young is more like the "caring" mother superior. I can't find a good example of a low intelligence dictator to compare with for Anna P. though. Pauline is threatening to launch a claim against the QLD government for unconstitutional border closure, as is Clive Palmer against the Western Australia government for similar. I'd love to see Pauline and Clive succeed in thier claims, and government heads roll, but it's going to be a tax payer funded battle. Anna reckons the border will be opened before the case gets heard - stupid woman is missing the point and still happy to cripple the economy in the meantime, without any justification and advice to the contrary. Like DBT said, it's all about control.

I've been too speechless to type a response recently. The battle to reopen the borders is on the news every day and a couple of days ago Anna responded to why she was keeping QLD's closed she said that she had been losing sleep over it and didn't want to open too early, have an outbreak and then cause untold economic loss as a result. My jaw hit the ground (again), she doesn't realise that she's causing untold economic loss as a result of what she is doing now. A reporter questioned what basis she had to back her stance especially since it seemed to contradict the advice of many other health advisors, and all she could say to the reporter was how would they feel if the COVID came back and affected someone they knew. Seems like "fear of god" style tactic is an acceptable response. Not something you expect from a leader, in fact a very weak response. I kinda think she's "lost the plot" to the point of incompetence. Doesn't say much about her party either.

She's not doing herself or her party any favours by not being rational or reasonable according to health advice by virologists. Just adding to the hardship of struggling businesses.

So, where is she getting the money for her bid to buy Virgin? Dutton tore her a new one over that. I believe the QLD government ended up not registering as an interested buyer. Maybe she's upset and taking it out on QLD - if she can't send us into worse debt that way, at least she can cause more financial pain with the borders. Even the QLD police are pushing for border opening - it's taking them away from more important things.

Isn't Anna P. the one that resisted big Adani coal to to please the enviro voter... but then went with Adani to please the unions which support her party... What happened there/how did she spin that one? Dutton tore her a new one over that...
X-AFP Dutton ain't the sharpest tool in the Aus.cabinet either. How dumb are AFP?... one of their own working in the gov. mail room ACT, found a suspicious package of white powder which he thought might be Anthrax, so he just cut it open and tasted it on the premises... LoL. There was also a security breach at AFP HQ Sydney... A guy just drove up to the vehicle entry security gate and said he had an appointment, so they let him in.. he parked it up then got in the lift with an officer from the anti-terror unit but was unchallenged until they both got out on the anti terror unit floor together before it twigged,. They then nabbed him and searched his vehicle and found weapons. Imagine the possible outcome is he had Anfo stacked in his vehicle and opened up with an Uzi.... They can't secure their own HQ from such amateurs but want you to trust them to keep the nation safe from shrewd hardcore career terrorists.

Makes you wonder. They had isolated 10 suburbs as part of the latest outbreak, but what the heck, lets shut down the state border just to play it safe. It's "one-up-man-ship" by the state politicians more than anything - our state is better than your state, your state is a contagion cesspool, we look after our state better because we are better politicians and deserve to be re-elected. The economic pain from restricting trade by doing this and the long term effect on the economy really don't seem to matter to them - they only need to make it to the next election, and hopefully the pain will have subsided by the time of the election after that (with a bit of luck some other crisis will appear so to divert focus away from previous poor decisions).

The way it's going, shutting everything down every time there's a breakout of Covid/ new bad flu, there is not going to be an economy.

I wonder how many businesses go under this time around, how many jobs lost and the damage to the economy in the long term. Is this going to happen every time there's a bad flu?

Yep, the craziness continues. Believing that there will be a vaccine or effective treatment is driving this knee jerk reaction. It looks like Sweden's rate is flattening out now. Death rate was kinda high (7% against reported cases) but we'll see how that pans out long term. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/sweden/5 months to let it run it's course? We're holding it back for prolonged pain and pretty much ignoring the consequential damages. Maybe we need to start accepting that our life span is now reduced but at least get on with normal life again.

Seven percent death rate seems high compared to world figures, which appear to average out at around, .07% percent overall...much higher for the elderly and vulnerable, but low for the young and healthy. But like you say, lockdowns probably just prolong the issue and destroy the economy.

Maybe Jeanette Young is starting to see the light by allowing exemption to the border barrier to Victorian's coming up to watch the footy, and she admitted that exemptions for sporting and entertainment industry personal are warranted because they bring money to the state. Sounds like she is happy to forgo her draconian health stance in the name of profit. Pity that it's hypocritical and she still sees fit to cripple those border businesses without possibility of any exemption. Isn't this decision outside of her portfolio anyway? - sounds like it should be more of an Anna decision.
Maybe Anna got sick of all the criticism and delegated some decisions to Jeanette - would this be a leader folding under pressure?

DBT, here’s what I see in the middle of the US. The publicized death rate is about 1.6% about 16x that of influenza here in my state. In my county, with a lot of older folks, the death rate is .16% or 1.6x that of influenza. That includes dividing deaths by confirmed positive test x 100.
However, it’s accepted that up to 40% of carriers are totally asymptotic, so the denominator is likely much higher meaning the death rate JUST from the Wuhan virus might be lower yet.
But here’s what’s happened in the States until quietly corrected by the CDC about 3 weeks ago. A 20 year something dies in a motorcycle accident and at autopsy tests positive. Counted as a Covid death. A 93 year old dies in a nursing home and is tested post-death; it’s positive— another Wuhan death even though she might have died from a stroke, or an MI, or whatever. All those who died of any means and were tested positive after death were counted as Covid deaths.
The CDC finally differentiated “dying OF Covid” and “dying WITH Covid” those weeks ago. The number of actually dying from the virus complications solely was, let’s say about 5% of the 200,000 publicized for our nation.
Of course we are in an election year and the left deep state was using this pandemic to paint as black a sky as possible to use against Trump and the Republicans. However, a good portion of the left are also true the sky-is-falling types who live in a deluded world of timidity.
Everything Wuhan virus is filtered through politics. It sounds like you have that going on there also.

Yep, complete idiots. They are trying to eradicate the virus completely by shutdown controls - saw on the news today, not sure who the state official was, that he said that it would be a world class feat if the virus could be completely stopped here. They're looking for some sort of self gratifying badge of honour at the cost of the country's economy. I think the politicians realise that they won't be in government as the repair to the economy takes place, but will go on to claim all the lives that they saved while they made the decisions.
"Tin hat" time: It wouldn't surprise me if we see another bout of widespread shutdowns before Christmas and then also early next year. Those morons need to sit down and do an economic assessment - cost versus potential lives saved. Terrible as it may sound, It's just part of a risk assessment - people die, and the likelihood and cost factors into it. There is a low level of risk where a certain number of people die that is acceptable. How much do we spend to save cancer patients, how much have we lost to save potential COVID victims - I'll bet COVID wins in that comparison.
And QLD Labour's election campaign propaganda now includes "saving lives to ensure faster economic recovery" - I doubt it! They are hurting the younger people by increasing unemployment and having them withdraw their superannuation to try and stay in the black. The young people are the future economic rebuilders, and the Aussie state governments are doing all they can to cripple them.
And our media stir the fear pot by making out that the increasing number of positive COVID cases in Europe are doom reappearing, yet if they looked at the corresponding death rates they would see that it's a non event - the bulk of those susceptible were taken during the first run.
This pandemic has really been kind of embarrassing - statistically it's like a really bad flu, and doesn't compare to the other earlier flu versions that many more people and age groups were susceptible to.
Rant over.
