That checkering on your rifle looks great Dirtfarmer, great build!
Anyone weighed their factory stock? I’m curious how much weight I’d save with an edge fill Micky.

I wouldn’t spend $600 to “upgrade” to an Edge. I don’t have that much in the rifle.
Agree with DF, I didn't weigh the factory stock but not heavy by any means. Will see if I still have it stashed some where. I went with the McMillan because the factory stocks on the 1640's or 640's are not to my liking. I like the LOP but the forends are either too narrow or too fat and triangular for my hand. The drop at comb wasn't what I was looking for either. Since I was re-barreling and wanted a light build, I went for the McMillan Edge. No regrets.
It's a 30-06 on a small-ring commercial Mauser action with a 22" barrel. Stock geometry and balance are perfect for offhand shooting. It shoots MOA with cheap 180-grain factory ammo, it has excellent iron sights, and it can hang with a pre-64 Model 70 Featherweight all day long.
So, yeah, these rifles don't need to be customized. They DO need a recoil pad because they're actually lighter than a Tikka T3x, and they need glass bedding because they eventually kick out of their stocks. A Timney doesn't hurt, either, but that's about it.

Started out as a Husky 30-06. Now it's a 35 Whelen AI. I did all the work except the barrel, which was installed and profiled by the late John Pell (back in the early 90's).
Any do a build off the 1640 Husqvarna action? Would love to see and hear about your rifle.
Here's one I did awhile back. 1640 action. A modified tang, modified bolt release, 3-position safety, new bolt handle, featherweight barrel in .270win.
My Husky is a 30-06 and looks like the one Jordan Smith posted pics on. How do I know if it is a 1640? It is a slick cycling light weight rifle with a Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x36 and a B&C reticle sitting in Warne QD rings. I have had it for three years and not hunted it as I usually use my old pre-64 Mod. 70 Featherweigt if using a 30-06.
I have loaded up some 168 grain Barnes TTSX in Norma brass with Fed. 210 Match primers and H4350 and hope to get to the range in a week so I can bring it along when I take my two grandsons after caribou.
I bought it from a guy and got a deal as the recoil lug was splitting and I had it fixed and a Talley cross bolt installed and and the action and barrel channel full contact bedded. I had a set of Euro swivel bases in-layed and the screws timed and put a 3/4 inch brown Pachmayer Sporting Clays recoil pad on it. I had a gun smith work on the trigger, it is crisp enough, but breaks a hair over 4 lbs. I prefer 2.5 to 3 lbs. on a big game rifle. I want to keep the stock trigger and may talk to another gun smith about it this winter. I grew up shooting and hunting with and old 03A3 Springfield and believe it gave me a tolerance for less then perfect triggers.
I need to find a standing single leaf rear sight similar to what XS sells with the white line up the middle. I put a Patridge bronze front post on it. I will probably load up some 200 grain Barnes TTSX bullets or some 220 grain Nosler Partitions and use them with out the scope when carrying the rifle on a hike, etc. I like iron sights for such use.
I am very fond of the little Husky and it's looks and light weight. But, I feel the same way about my old Mod. 70 ought six. I will probably gift the little Husky to my 14 year old grandson that likes shooting my Marlin 45-70 and heavy loaded 400 grain bullets. Weird kid. But, I make him use the shooting sticks and told him to avoid the bench with that beast. LOL
Every once in a while I think about getting a Husky in 9.3x62. Crap, I am almost 70 and hunt most of the time with a custom Mod. 70 in .338 Winny and I am waiting for the smith to turn a Mirkoru Mod. 71 into a .348 Ackley Improved. I don't need another safe queen.
I had a lieightweight Husqvarna in 30-06. Can’t believe people are wanting to save weight. That thing kicked as bad as anything I’ve shot. Sold it to someone here
Finally picked up the 1640 in 6.5x55 that I have been searching for for a while now. It is headed off to Dennis Olson for a red recoil pad, trigger tune, bedding and feed and function. Really looking forward to getting this one into the field.
I do have another clean 1640 action, stock, take-off 30-06 barrel and some NECG sights that will work with the factory contour, if anyone is looking to do a build... I do not think I will be putting it to use anytime soon.
I have a 1640 in 9.3x62 and have lightly customized it. It's a great, smooth, solid action, but there are some drawbacks.
1. I don't like the trigger and safety system compared to a Mauser 98. It just feels cheap by comparison and mine constantly engaged itself (locking the bolt) under recoil. My fix was to use an FN commercial 98 bolt shroud and flag safety with a timney trigger. You could use a timney with a built in safety and the stock shroud, but I personally find that amateurish as it doesn't lock the bolt and looks out of place. I cringe when I see high dollar custom rifles with the timney safety sticking up.
2. Stock options are tricky. They're not impossible, and there are semi-inletted stocks out there. You can also use a small ring 98 stock modified to fit. A large ring can be made to fit, but there will be gaps around the receiver ring. Mine is glass bedded into a large ring stock. Looks shabby, but shoots well.
3. Bottom metal is not interchangeable with a 98 and most are aluminum. There are steel units, but they're a bit cruder than a commercial mauser or argentine 09.
I'll see if I have any pics of mine.
I'm a little late to this, but FWIW, I recently installed a Timney w/safety on my FrankenMauser, and left the two-position wing in place after talking with Timney TS. The safeties work perfectly and independently, I have a positive bolt-lock with the sear lifted, and I can upload with the trigger blocked. The Timney safety is quiet for close-in work. Trigger pull is now a pretty consistent 2.5 lbs instead of 6. Might offend some purists, but it works and I didn't have to spend $300 and wait who-knows-how-long for a gunsmith to install an M70-type. Since I can only see one side of the rifle at a time, except when shooting, it looks just fine to me.
Always thought the wing on the left was perfect for iron sight use, but not so much for scopes.
