The wife and I went kayaking on a tributary to the Wisconsin River yesterday and when we stopped for a shore lunch we picked the wrong place. We encountered three Northern Water snakes. Two slithered into the stream and one stayed with a bad attitude.

Northern water snakes can be aggressive.

Nice!

But yeah the basic water snake can really cop an attitude once in awhile...

Cool pic.

For my wife and I, that would not be "the wrong spot" ,

but we like snakes, especially the non-venomous ones. When we run across them we use them as training aids for "Leave it" commands with our dogs.

I hope your lunch was nice. Thanks for the pics of a beautiful snake.

Aggressive...that is funny

Smashed a Copperheads head flat a week ago and that fugger kept coming at me...he was no match for my flip flop.

The ones that quickly slip away get a pass. Attitudes are dealt with harshly.

My oldest son and I were cutting pond willows yesterday and saw several of the water snakes.

We have a couple of gas powered water pumps on each side of the pond that we use to pump water to cement water troughs in pastures. We cover the pumps with old plastic totes and often find the snakes under the totes when we fill the troughs.

Say what you want....some of them are aggressive little azz's....

Had one about 4' long that decided the boat dock was his and he wasn't leaving. He's gone.

Pushed into the water with a net handle, right?

When I was 8years old I encountered a big Hog Snake in the woods behind the house.
It was just half curled up and motionless. Nudging it with my toe made it puff up and beat on the leaves with it’s tail. I found out that cartoons were true. One can levitate and run in the air without going anywhere for a second or so.

Snakes don’t bother me. I think they’re pretty cool. Encountered this guy as I was leaving the range last week. He never once rattled. Even when I threw a water bottle at his head - twice. I left him alone after that and he left me alone... Gentlemen’s agreement. Hopefully he’ll remember that if there’s a next time. grin

Dryfly,

I’m sorry but - Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang and bang....stomp, stomp...whack, whack, whack...repeat as necessary...!

Ran over a coral snake with my tractor yesterday. It had a brief psychotic reaction.

I smiled.

I was fishing bridge riprap last spring and must have gotten near, if there is such a thing, a den of water snakes. There were six or seven swimming around, some coming near the boat. Even though they're nonvenomous, it creeped me out and I went somewhere else.
