I want to upgrade the scope on my .338 Win Mag. I recently added a muzzle brake to the rifle. I do not dial so I am not worried about tracking at all. I have become a big fan of the illuminated dot reticles. The duplex fire dot from Leupold is great and I really like the Burris E dot illuminated. I bought 2 of those Burris Four X 1.5-6x42 from Doug to put on my deer rifles. They are awesome scopes for last minute Carolina deer & hogs.

The main thing I have concerns over is durability. I would think a braked .338 Win Mag could stress a scope pretty well. Over the last 21 yrs. on this .338, I have used Vari X III & VX III in 2.5-8 or 3.5-10. A few years ago I upgraded to the VX6 2.5-10x 42. Great optics but it does not have an illuminated dot reticle. No issues with any of those but that was when there was no muzzle brake on the rifle. Will the addition of the brake increase stress on a scope versus a non-braked .338??? I need the expertise of the ‘Fire on this. Thanks

I would look at updating the candle handle to some sort of battery-operated one.

Watching this thread.

I'm considering the Swarovski Z5i 2.4-12x50, but haven't read enough good reviews to purchase.

I have a 4.5x14 VX-III on my 338. It’s been fine.

I have heard it said that a brake stresses scopes ..I haven't found that the case..Why should it..I personally think it's the opposite ...It lessens recoil so should help....maybe I'm wrong ...I have a .300 Win mag with a brake and MeOpta scope and a 30/06 Ultra light with a Zeiss (made by MeOpta I'm told) with no problems after about 200 shots through each....My wife has a Tika 30/06 ,,brake..and a Zeiss with 100 shots ands no problems..Couple smiths I know that install brakes have never said a word about scope problems and brakes...I also think Burris would be fine as I've used them also.....

Thanks ManyMoons...Yes stress on the scope and durability is my major concern. The best thing to do is find a scope with the illuminated dot that I like and start shooting. I will know from shooting if the scope can handle it. Curious if anyone with a brake has had a scope issue?

Why is a brake supposed to affect a scope? Be Well, Rustyzipper.

A brake can affect scopes on lighter rifles, for the same reason a springer air rifle is much harder on scopes than the mild recoil would suggest: The brake can result in the rifle starting backward, then suddenly stopping, or even going forward a little as the powder gas goes through the brake. In other words, different vibrations than many scopes are designed to resist.

This effect has been noted by more than one gunsmith who makes really light hunting rifles.

I have a Burris 3x9 with lighted reticle I recently purchased one of the 4x 1.5x6 lighted reticle. Externally they are the same scope. I assume the internals are very similar as well other than the glass.Anyways I pounded the piss out of 3x9 on a 12 gauge sluggun with three inch slugs. I later moved the scope to a 350 remington mag. I have run a couple hundred rounds of well over max loads through the 350. Scope has held up perfectly.

As Mule Deer mentions the brake might change the direction of recoil forces which a scope may or may not handle. The one and only experience I ever had with a braked gun was my brothers 500 smith and wesson pistol. Don't know how many mounts and rings we broke. I did all the mounting and I never in dozens of guns had any issue with a broke mount or ring. Eventually with the help of guy making the mounts came to the conclusion that something with the recoil pulse was doing it. We assumed that the recoil was starting one direction and abruptly stopping. In essence we were smacking the rings and mount with a hammer instead of everything being pushed in a gradual increase and then decrease of force. Ended up using four scopes rings and gluing everything together to fix the problem. Amazingly the scope never had an issue.

the only model Nightforce has that fits my requirements of an illuminated duplex type reticle is the SHV™ 3-10x42. Do you any experience with this model? How durable is it.

I’ve run the shv 3-10 non illuminated for a few years. Packed it around Kodiak Island on top of a 338 and took the same scope to Mexico on a 7mm for coues. No complaints from me and I have dialed it several times. If they didn’t use the obnoxious 56mm on their higher magnification plex version I would have that one too. 😁

Have that same scope, but on a Creed, so obviously not getting hammered by recoil.

Forceplex reticle. A/O on non illuminated model.

I like mine. From all accounts, pretty well built, bullet proof scope.

I do not have any experience with SHV model.....only the NXS and ATACR, but I would guess the SHV would handle your .338 without issues.
